UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SPRING-BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
Application filed September 29,1906. Serial No. 336,711.
To all wham it may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM F. ADE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of WVilliamsport, Lycoming county, Pennsyl vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Beds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in spring beds and the object of my invention is to furnish a spring bed bottom which can be arranged to at the same time give equal comfort to persons of widely varying weight.
In carrying out my invention I make use of two strengths of springs, the heavy springs being adapted to be used by persons of heavy weight, the light springs by persons of light weight. Preferably the springs are carried by metal slats which are arranged in pairs each pair of slats with their springs forming one unit of the bed bottom.
The heavy springs are placed from the middle to one end of the slats, the light s rings from the middle to the other end.
y this arrangement a bed can be made hard on one side and soft on the other, or, by reversing every other set of slats so as to equally distribute the hard and soft springs upon both sides of the bed, it can be made throughout of a uniform hardness.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1, is aplan view of part of a bed bottom; Fig. 2, a side elevation of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, an end elevation of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, an end elevation of the adjacent sides of two units l showing the means for securing the units together, said means being in position for a wide separation of the units.
a-a, b-b are metal slats; preferably these slats are of a channel form for the pur pose of securing the greatest strength with the smallest amount of metal.
For ease in handling and for convenience in shipping rate units for each of which I prefer to use two slats which carry springs cd-e-f. The springs c-d are made of light wire, the springs e-f of heavier wire. Preferably each spring is made double, that is two s rings are formed from a single wire as s own, every other spring of each unit is fastened at its bottom to the two slats of the unit, the bottoms of the intermediate s rings being fastened each to one slat. 1% the I make my bed bottom in sepal drawings the springs 1 each slat of the unit,
to one of the slats. The springs c and (l are of light wire and form a soft bed bottom; the springs c f are of heavier wire and form a harder bed bottom. If the units of the bottom be arranged as shown in Fig. 1 a bed. having one soft and l one harder side would be the result, if every l other one of the units be turned end for end i the springs would be so distributed as to make a bottom of even hardness throughout. 1 The sides of the ends of the channels, if channels be used for the slats, are cut away as 3 shown at g, Fig. 2, to form a seat that will rest "firmly upon the side rails of the bed frame. The ends of the slats forming each unit of the bottom are joined by a bar It and these slats are further secured by the springs c-f as shown. To the ends of the slats ab are pivoted bars i the outer ends of which are adapted to interlock with one another as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 to space and to hold 0 and f are fastened to the springs (Z and e each h the several units of the bottom as may be necessary for frames of varying size. If the bed frame be narrow the crimps are placed one completely over the other as shown in Fig. 3 if the frame be wider only the outside crimp of each bar is in engagement as shown in Fig. 4.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A spring bed bottom composed of units each of which consists of two slats carrying at one end springs of one strength and at the other end springs of another strength.
2. A spring bed bottom composed of units each formed of two channels one of the ends of said channels carrying springs of one strength, the other ends carrying springs of another strength.
\ 3. The combination in a spring bed bottom of a series of units each of which consists l of two slats carrying for part of theirlength springs of one strength and for the rest of their length springs of another strength, said I springs, and crimped adjusting bars carried by said slats for adj ustably holding said units in place.
