LETTER-FILE.
Speecation of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907'.
Application filed July 24, 1905. Serial No. 271.076.
To all whom t n1/(ty concern:
Be it known that I, JOHANN J'axon Dn'r'rwYLnn-BRDERLIN, a citizen oi' the Swiss Republic, residing at Sissach, Canton Baselland, Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Letter- Files, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a letter iile wherein the documents are not periorated but are held in a sheet metal frame by means of a spring pressed bar, the latter being connected by the spring to a hinged wall ot said frame.
The invention is shown in the annexed drawing in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the letter 'File with the covers opened. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof with the trame partly broken away. Figs. 3 and 4 are a side elevation and plan respectively', of the hinged wall ot' the sheet metal frame before referred to.
On the bacl; 1 ot the letter file, which is provided with two covers 2 and 3, is 'fixed an open sheet metal trame consisting of three fixed members or walls 4, 5 and (i, and having a suitable height. The said frame is closed on its fourth side by a hinged wall or flap 7, which is suspended at one end in the wall 6 of the trame as at 11 and at the other end is adapted to be connected to the opposite wall el by means of a spring pressed bolt S engaging a slot 9 in said wall 4. The said hinged wall 7 is of U shaped cross-section except at its ends. The bolt 8 is held in the wall 7 by he sides oi said wall which are bent over the bolt as at 8, Fig. 4L, and one of said sides has a slot 1S through which passes a pin 10 iig's'crewed into the bolt, said pin and slot permitting the bolt to be withdrawn from the slot 9 in the wall 4 and therefore of rotating the wall or iiap 7 around the pivotal point 11.
A guide pin 2() is iixed to the wall 7 and around said pin is located a coiled spring 13, adapted to normally press the bolt 5 in a 'lorward direction into the slot 9 and lieep said bolt in closed position. On said hinged wall 7 adjacent the point where said wall is suspended in the wall 6, is riveted a ilat spring 12, the tree end ol which extends to about the center ol the frame and passes between the two side members of a bar 19 el" U-shaped 'cross section. A pin 14, is passed over the spring 12 through both members of the bar for the purpose of removing or liliting said bar when the side wall 7 is swung open about the point 11. On the [rame part 5 near the walls 4 and 6 are iixed pins 15 and 16, which act as guides for the bar 19.
The bar is pressed against the frame part 5 by the spring 12, when the letter iile is empty but by displacing a bow or slide 17, placed over or around the hinged wall 7 and spring 12, the bar can be kept at the requisite distance from said `frame part 5 to exert the desired pressure on the documents placed in the file.
For inserting the documents in or removing them from the iile, the connection between the two sides or walls 7 and 4 ol" the 'frame is unfastened by withdrawing the bolt 8, whereupon the wall 7, to which the spring 12 and bar 19 are attached can be rotated round the pivotal point 11.
\Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Iatent ol' the United States is 1. In a letter lile the combination oiz a sheet metal frame inserted therein and having three iixed walls, a hinged wall suspended in one oi said iixed walls, a spring attached to said hinged wall, a bar acted upon by said spring, means for regulating the pressure ot' said spring on the bar, and means tor detachably connecting said hinged wall to the frame aforesaid substantially as described.
2. In a letter ille the combination ol a sheet metal trame inserted therein and having three fixed walls, a hinged wall suspended in one oi said YIixed walls, a spring attacl'ied to said hinged wall, a bar acted upon by said spring, means for regulating the pressure ol said spring on the bar, and a spring pressed bolt adapted to dctachably connect said hinged wall to the lraine aforesaid substantially as described.
3. In a letter 'Iile the combination of a sheet metal frame inserted therein and having three iXed Walls, a hinged Wall suspendl connect the latter to the frame aforesaid ed in one of said fixed Walls, a spring atsubstantially as described. 1o taohed to said hinged Wall, a bar of U section In Witness whereof I have signed this acted upon by said spring, a slide on said I specification in the presence of two Witnesses.
hinged Wall adapted toregulete the pressure JOHANN JAKOB DETTWYLER-BRDERLIN. of the spring on the bar, guides for the latter Wjtnesses: and a spring pressed boit slidably mounted in y i JBERT GROEFE,
said hinged Wall and adapted to detaehably i E. KLIMERT.
