HERBERT M. COLE, OF WILLIAHSTON, MICHIGAN.
MAIL-BOX ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
Application filed February 28, 1906. Serial No. 303,437.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERBERT M. COLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Williamston, in the county of Ingham, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mail-Box Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,'and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to mail boxes and more particularly to attachments for boxes and has for its object to provide an indicator and coin holder combined which may be attached to rural route boxes to inform the car- .rier as to what supplies are desired bythe owner of the box, the coin holder being designed to retain the necessary payment for such supplies.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following'description.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a view showing a mail box in section with the present invention therein,
two of the leaves of the latter being shown in position to disclose the signs thereupon. Fig. 2 is a view looking at the attachment at right angles to Fig. 1ft; Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the attachment taken on line 33 of Fig. 1. 4 is a View showing the attachment in the position shown in Fig. 1 with the remainder of the leaves in operative position.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a mail box 5 within which the present invention is disposed, the latter consisting of a vertically extending block 6 which is provided with a plurality of longitudinal notches 7 opening through its opposite side faces and its up er end, this notching resulting in a plurality of spaced tongues 8, which extend upwardly from a body portion 9. Each of the tongues 8 is provided with a perforation 10, these perforations lying in registration with each other for the reception of a pivot pin 11, this pin being also passed through a plurality of leaves 12, one of which is disposed in each notch 7 and these leaves are movable pivotally to extend at times laterally from the block and to lie at times between the tongues. Each of the wings has marked thereupon words indicating different articles of stationery, one bearingf'thei; words stamped envelops, another stamps, another postals, a fourth paper and en velops, etc. It will be understood that when one or more of the articles marked upon the leaves are desired, leaves bearing them are moved laterally to bring their wording into View, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
A coin holder 13 is provided and consists of a helical spring having its end portions bent to extend parallel to each other and engaged in the block of which the attachment is formed, it being intended that money in payment for the supplies'shall be engaged between the convolutions of the helix.
l/Vhat is claimed is:
A supply indicating attachment for rural route boxes comprising a block having a plurality of notches formed therein and resultant spaced tongues, wings "pivoted between the tongues for movement to lie at times therebetween and at times in laterally extending position, said wings having supply-indicating attachments marked thereon, and a coin holder carried by comprising a helical spring having its ends engaged in the block and arranged for the reception of money between its convolutions.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
HERBERT M. COLE.
Witnesses H. M. BIGELOW, FRANK l-l. Come.
