SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 526,855, dated October 2, 1 894.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY H. CABOT, of Bristol, in the coun-ty of Bristol and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Fasteners 5 and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine,` reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in devices which are adapted to secure several sheets of paper, dac., together, and to secure articles to the layer orlayers of paper.
One object o f the invention is to provide a simple and durable paper-fastener which can be produced at a small cost.
Another object of the invention is-to produce a new and improved paper-fastener by means of which articles may be secured to the paper. v
The invention consists in a sheet-metal paper-fastener having lower clamping-arms separated by a vertical slit and located edge to edge, upper clamping-arms of less diameter than the lower arms, and a central securing-arm longer than the upper arms and extending down to the upper end of the slit dividing the lower arms.
The invention likewise consists in such other novel features of construction and combination of parts as may hereinafter be more fully described and pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 represents aview of the improved paper fastener and securing device. Fig. 2 represents a view of the same showing the manner of fastening toa paper or other .dat article.

In carrying my invention into practice I form a paper-fastener and securing device from a sheet-metal strip which I divide for a short portion of its length by a central slit. At the opposite `end the diameter of the strip is reduced so as to leave a central tongue extending therefrom. Inow divide this end of the strip into three parts by slits extending in lines with the edges of the central tongue and to a distance slightly beyond the end of the central tongue at the opposite end of the strip.
In the drawings 5 and 6 represent the base v arms of the paper-fastener which are separated by a slit 7 and are preferably of equal width. From the inner portion of each base arm the material extends upward to form the securing-tongue 8 which is separated by the slits 9 and 10 from the upper fastening arms 11 and 12, the slits 9 and l0 extending down to points opposite the upper end of the slit 6o 7 so that the arms maybe bent on this line. This device is designed not only for a paperfastener by the use of the arms 5 and 6, and 9 and 10, but also serves as a device for securing articles to the paper or card to which it is attached by its fastening arms, the tongue 8 being of any convenient length for this purpose.
The paper fastener is secured in place to one or several sheets of paper or cards by 7o first cutting a slit through the card or paper sufficiently long to allow the passage of the arms 1l and l2. The arms 5 and 6 are now bent at right angles with the main portion of the fastenen'extending in opposite directions. The tongue 8 and the arms 1l and 12 are then passed through the slit in the paper and are bent down as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The article may now be secured to the card by bending So the tongue 8 into the shape of a hook or by passing the tongue over the article and then through a slit previously cut in the paper, the tongue, in the process, being bent at its j uncture with the arms 5 and 6. 85
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A paper fastener consisting of a piece of sheet-metal having the base arms 5 and 6 9o separated by the slit 7, the securing-tongue extending from the metal above this slit, and the upper fastening-arms l0 and 11 separated from the tongue 8 by the slits 9 and lO which extend downward to points opposite the `upper end of the slit 7.
