i iuiiieation filed February 16, 1906. Serial No. 301.357.
To all whom, 21D' may concer/L:
Be it known that we, J osnrii BAnnsiiEY, a citizen of the United States, and a i'esident of Montclair, Essex county, New Jersey, and j ALBERT J. RosEN'rnE'rER, a titizen of the United States, and a resident of Boonton, in the eounty of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useiul Improvements in Door Cheeks and Olosers, of 'which the following' is a speeiilieation.
The invention relates to improvements in door cheeks and elosers, and eonsists in the novel features, arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter desta'ibed and pai'- tieularly pointed out in the tlaiins.
Ve present our invention herein as einbodied in a eheek and eloser adapted for srreen and storni dooi's, and aside from the purpose ot' providing a highly ellieient, du rable, simple and inexpensive door' cheek and eloser, one obj et of the invention is to produee sueh device in a form adapted to lie within the narroir spate found between the usual inside door and the outside screen or storm door, the inner door' ordinarily opening inwardly and the streen or storm door opening outwardly. The door' ehetk and closer may, however, be applied with equal conveniente to a door' opening' inwardly. The parts of our door' Cheek and closer are so disposed, in the preferred oonstruetion, that the door will stand in its wide open position when moved to that point.
One of the more essential obj eets of the invention is to provide a novel arrangement and disposition of the elosing spring and its eoaeting' parts, and another Vfeature of the invention is the pi'ovision of a spetial oonstruction and arrangement of lever and oonneeting' rod for operating the piston, whereby the piston is given a i'apid initial movement during the iirst part ol the opening movement of the door, and the spi'iiig is enabled to exert its greatest power at the elosing point of the movement of the door, at 'which point the greatest eheeking' aetion is secured.
The invention also involves novel details of arrangement and construction adapting the door ehetk and closer to be adjusted to meet the various eonditions 'which may be met in applying' the saine to praetioal use. i The invention will be vhilly uiidei'stood l li'oin the detailed description hereinafter presented, i'elierenee being had to the aeeompaiiyiiig di'awiiigs, in which:
Figure 1 is a top View, partly broken away and partly in seetion, of a door' cheek and closer embodying our invention, the saine being' illustrated as applied to the liing'e-side of a door, with the spring' and cylinder setured to the lintel ovei' the door and the eonneet-ing rod to the outei' end oli a braeket conneeted with the door; Fig. 2 is a :liront elevation, partly broken away, of saine; Fig'. 3 is a front elevation of a portion ol the lintel with the seeuring bracket and spring' retaining and adjusting means applied thereto, Fig. 3 being' partly in section on the dotted line 5%*3 of F ig. 1, and the elosingspring being' omitted therefrom; Fig. 4 is a detaehed view of the inner end of the checking' eylinder; Fig. 5 is a see-tion of saine on the dotted line 5 5 of Fig. 4, Fig. 6 is a top view, partly broken away, of the door eheek and eloser, lintel and door'7 the lattei' being shown in its open position, Fig. 7 is a vertical section through the securing' braekot and uspring' adjusting means, on the dotted line 7-7 of Fig. 3 3' Eig. 8 is a longitudinal horizontal section through a portion of the main seeuring bracket and lever ai'in pivoted thereto and is presented to illustrate more clearly the eonnertion ol the spring' plunger-i'od with said arm; Fig. '9 is a like section tln'ough the outer end portion of the main securing l-ratket and is presented to more elearly illustrate the means for adjusting the tension ol the dosing-spring. Eig'. 10 is a top view olE the brazwket to which the eonneeting i'od or link of the cheek and closer is pivotally seeured, a portion of the said rod and a portion of the lintel being' shown, and Fig'. 11 is a vertieal seetion of saine on the dotted line 11-11 olE `Fig'. 10.
ln the drawings, 1() designates a door, 11 a doorfjainb to which the door is hinged, as usual, and 12 the lintel over the door.
'lhe door eheek and eloser eoinpi'ises a hinged eheeking cylinder 14, a pivoted operating yoke or two ended lever 15, a pivoted rod l 6 eonneeted with said yoke and a bracket 17, a piston rod 1S eonneeted with said yoke, a cup-piston 19 carried by said i'od 1S within said cylinder, a Closing spring' 20, and a eoacting' spring plunger-rod 21 in pivotal en- IOO gagement with the inner end of said lever 15, which is at its middle portion pivotally secured to said piston rod and at its outer end pivotally connected with said rod 16, the inner end of said lever being pivotally connected with a bracket 22 which, in the present instance, is firmly applied to the lintel above the door. The cylinder 14 is at its outer end hinged to the outer end of said bracket 22, and the rod 16 is hinged to the bracket 17 which in the present instance is secured to the door 10. The cylinder 14 has upon its outer end a cap 23 and upon its inner end a cap 24, the latter being preferably pressed up from sheet steel and having a central opening surrounded by an integral flange 25 (Fig. 5) to afford a bearing for the piston rod 18. The cap 24 fits closely upon the cylinder 14 and is detachably held in place by the pins 26 passing through apertures in the sides of said cap and cylinder, as shown in Fig. 5, said pins being formed on the ends of a piece of spring wire 27, which is located against the outer face of the cap and extends around the piston rod, as shown in Fig. 4, the said wire being coiled and tempered to constitute a spring of contractile force adapted to bind the pins 26 within their receiving apertures and in the position shown in Fig. 5.
W'hen it is desired to remove the cap 24 the pins 26 will by means of a screw-driver or other convenient implement, be forced outwardly from theirreceiving apertures. The pins 26 constitute spring-pins affording a very inexpensive and convenient means for detachably securing the cap 27 in place, and they dispense with screw threads and the like for such purpose. The cap 23 will also, preferably, be pressed up from sheet steel, and the said cap fits closely upon the outer end of the cylinder 14 and may be secured in place by solder or other convenient means. The cap 23 is formed integrally with an outwardly disposed perforated lug 2S to coperate with the perforated lugs 29 on the bracket 22 pivotally connected thereto by the pin 30 by which the cylinder is hinged to said bracket.
' The cap 23 is also formed with an arm 31 which is bent into U-shape and apertured in linewith a threaded aperture formed in the cap 23 and cylinder 14 (Fig. 6) to receive the point of a regulating screw 32, the said threaded aperture constituting an air vent and said screw affording means for more or less closing the same, so as to regulate the escape of air from the cylinder during the closing of the door. The aperture in the arm 31 is threaded to engage the thread on the screw 32, and the said arm has alimited outward spring tension so that when the entering end of the screw is in the vent aperture, the said arm 31 may, by its tension, place a binding force on said screw, thereby preventing the loosening or loss of the latter due to the jarring occasioned by the use of the door 10. The air from the cylinder 14 escapes around the thread on the screw 32 and the assage of the air from the cylinder is resistedpin proportion as the screw is worked inwardly into the vent aperture.
The cup-piston 19 carried by the piston rod is of ordinary form and construction requiring no special description.
The yoke or double-ended lever 15 is formed with apertured ears 34 which pass upon the eye at the exposed end of the piston rod 18 and through these ears and eye is passed a pin or rivet 35 by which said yoke or lever becomes pivotally secured to said rod. The yoke or lever 15 is of special outline having an angularly or diagonally disposed section 30 initially extending toward the inner end of the cylinder 14, Where the ears 34 are formed, and a member or section 37 which initially extends rather closely along the cylinder 14 and substantially in parallelism therewith and with the lintel 12. The member or section 37 of the yoke or lever 15 is preferably bifurcated to receive between its upper and lower parts, when the door is closed, the outer portion of the rod 16, the outer end of the latter being pivotally secured to the outer end of said section 37 by means of a vrivet or pin 33. The rod 16 initially lies substantially parallel with the lintel 12, as shown in Fig. 1, and its inner end is pivotally secured by a pin 39 to the bracket 17 fastened to the door.
The bracket 17 comprises an upper adjustable section 40 and a lower supporting section 41 adapted to be secured to the door by means of screws, as shown in Fig. 2, and which section curves outwardly from the door and then upwardly and is formed upon its upper end with an outwardly extending horizontal guide-way head 42, between the sides of which the adjustable section 40 is seated. The adjustable section 40 is formed with a recess 43 and slot 44, and at its outer end said section 40 is formed with a solid portion to receive the pin 39. The section 40 is fastened to the head 42 of the section 41 by means of a screw 45 and nut 46, said screw passing through an aperture in the head 42 and the slot 44 in the section 40 and into the nut 46 which re'sts within the recess 43 and spans the space between the side walls of the same. The head of the screw 45 presses against the lower surface of the head 42 and due to the engagement of the nut 46 with the upper surface of the section 40, binds said head and section together. The side edges of the nut 46 being in close relation to the walls of the recess 43, said nut is unable to turn or rotate within said recess during the tightening or loosening of' IOO IOS
IIO
42 in a direction toward or from the door 10. When it is desired to adjust the section 4() it is simply necessary to slightly loosen the screw 45 and move the section 40 inwardly or outwardly as may be desired, and then retighten said screw, the slot 44 permitting said section 40 to be moved upon the screw 45. The lower section 41 of the bracket 17 extends outwardly from the door and then upwardly so that the upper portion of said section may extend upwardly and freely around any projectingl molding or other portion of the lintel 12. ln the construction shown in the drawings the face of the lintel 12 is parallel with the face of the door 1(), but in many instances the lintel may be Projected beyond the face ofthe door or possess a projecting molding around which the upper portion of the section 41 must extend, and in order to adapt the present de" vice to the varying conditions to be met we extend the upper portion of the section 41 first outwardly from the door and then upwardly and thence outwardly in the formation of the head 42.
The bracket 22 is formed at its outer end with the aforesaid ears 2() to receive the pin 3() by which the outer end of the cylinder 41 is pivotally secured, and at its inner end the said bracket is formed with substantially corresponding ears 47 between which the inner end of the yoke or lever 15 is secured upon the pin 48. A projection 4S) (Fig. S) of the lever 15 extends beyond the pivot pin 48 and is at its outer' end gi fen the form of a vertical pin 50, the end of said lever about the pivot pin 4S being bifurcated and said pin 50 being integral with and connecting the upper and lower members of said bifurcated portion of said lever 15.
The pin 5() al'ords a bearing for the inner end of the spring actuated plunger 21, said plunger having a head provided with a bearing recess 51 fitting` upon said pin and maintained in such relation by the tension of the spring 2O mounted thereon and which is con fined between the shoulder 52 integral with said rod and a perforated plate 53 in which the outer end of said rod is movably mounted, said plate being formed on a slide 54 mounted for this purpose in the bracket 22 and formed on its outer end with a plate serving as a contact point for an adjusting screw 56 held within a threaded aperture in a rigid portion 57 of said bracket and provided with an exposed head whereby it may be moved inwardly against the slide 54 or withdrawn outwardly therefrom.
The slide 54 is normally free to be moved longitudinally on said bracket but is held against the screw 56 by the action of the spring 20, consequently will be substantially stationary during the'opening and closing of the door and hence subserves the purpose of an adjustable resistance against the pressure of said spring and afl'ords means whereby the initial tension of the spring` may be regulated at will by means of the screw 5G.
'l`he slide 54 may be movably mounted in the bracket 22 in various ways, but a convenient method of mounting` said slide consists in forming a longitudinal slot (il) in said bracket and in reeessing the inner surfaces of said bracket adjacent to the walls of said slot, as shown in lfig. 7, to receive dove-tail [langes (i1 formed on said slide, said slide being thus permitted to move longitudinally of the bracket 22 and [irmly held at its opposite edges thereby. 'lhe plates 53, forming a part of the slide 54 are formed adjacent to the edges of the bracket 22 with [ingers 62 (Figs. 3 and 7) which ride on the bracket and aid in maintainingl the due relation of the slide to said bracket; and between said plates 53, the slide 54 is longitudimdly recessed, as at (i3 (Fig. 7), to enable the rod 2l to have unobstructed movement. ln the construction presented we provide for the application of the slide 54 to the bracket 22 after the lat-- ter has been secured upon the lintel 22, or door as the case may be, and in respect of this part of our invention, we form notches (14 in the opposite edges of the runway for the slide, as shown in Fig. 3, of su[licient size to admit the [langes (31 formed on said slide, and in introducing the slide to the bracket we simply place the slide in between the opposite edges of the bracket and move the [langes (l1 through the notches (i4y and then move the said slide 54 longitiulinally of the bracket so as to carry said [langes (i1 from alinement with the notches (S4 and into the inner .recessed portion of said lnacket, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3. rlhe [langes (51 do not extend the entire length of the slide 54, but are approximately of the sir/,e represented by the dotted lines in Fig. 3. 'l`he notches (i4 are located at the outer end portion of the bracket 22 at a point at which no adjustment of the spring will require the [langes G1 to become located during the use of the device. rlhe slide 54 may also be withdrawn from the bracket 22 at any time desired without disturbing said bracket, to accomplish which it will simply be necessary to withdraw the screw 56 to a sullicient extent for the spring 2() to push the slide outwardly until the [langes (i1 thereof fome opposite to the notches 64, at which time upon freeing the point of the screw from the slide the latter may be withdrawn free of said braclY it.
The springT 2() is resisted by the plate 53 of the slide 54 and exerts its ell'ective force against the projection el() of the double ended lever 15.
The initial condition and relation of 'the 'parts of 'die appara'nis, when the doei' is in closed position, is illustrai ed in Fig. 1, 'the lever 15 inclining ouiavardly and Vtoward the cylinder 14 and thence extending along the TOO side of said cylinder and preferably on a line substantially parallel with the lintel 12 whereby the rod 16 Vmay extend substantially parallel with said lintel and with the section 37 of said lever 15.
The parts of the apparatus when constructed and arranged as shown in F 1, occupy the Vminimum amount of sp ace and may not only be used on the hinge-side of the door, as shown, but also may be successfully employed on the other side thereof within the confined space usually allowed between the regular inner door and an outer screen or storm door, and while this is an important consideration, the more essential advantage derived from the special construction and relation of the parts'shown is that by reason thereof we are enabled to secure a very desirable action in the apparatus and in its effect upon the door. During the opening of the door 10 the lever or yoke 15, during the first portion of such movement, rapidly assumes a position at right angles to the lintel and the projection 49 of said lever performs its most rapid and effective movement against the plunger rod 21; said projection then being substantially in a right angular relation to the said rod and moving against it and then as the door continues on its opening movement the lever 15 passing from its right angular relation gradually assumes a position more nearly parallel with the lintel 12 and the projection 49 of said lever gradually passes into line with the spring plunger rod 21, the spring exerting less and less effective force until finally when the door reaches its full open position, shown in Fig. 6, the said projection 49 will be substantially in line with the rod 21 and the spring although then fully compressed will not act to close the door and the latter may stand open. During the closing of the door, the 'movement of the latter towards its closed position will first be gentle and thereafter as 'the projection 49 of the lever 15 regains an angular relation to the spring plunger rod 21, the door will have an accelerated closing movement, with the result of creating the proper cushion in the outer end of the cylinder 12 and insuring the firm closing of the door, the form and relation of the lever 15 with respect to the spring and other portions of the apparatus compelling, under the full force of the spring, the effectual closingl of the door and the binding of same in its closed position. The maximum force of the spring is utilized during the closing movement of the door and overcome during the initial opening of the door, the arrangement and the relation of the paris being such that we attain the greatest spring power and the maximum check at the closing point of the door; and hence while the door is positively closed and held closed it is nevertheless prevented from banging.
A further advantage in the operation of the closer and check arises from the fact that due to the bifurcation of the lever 15 to receive the outer end of the rod 16, the pull exerted by said rod during the opening of the door is always in direct central line with said lever and with the spring plunger rod 21. The rod 16 and piston rod 18 are on the same horizontal plane and on the plane cf the horizontal central line of the lever 15 and spring plunger rod 21.
When it is desired to apply the door check and closer upon the side of a door opposite to the hinge-side thereof, the bracket 22 carrying the mechanism will be applied upon the door, and the outer end of the rod 16 will be connected to a bracket (such as in Fig. 1) secured to the door jamb.
