HOLDER ARM ron noon 'cHEcxsANn CLOSERS.
Application filed August 6,' 1926-.- Serial No. 127,622.
This invention relates to holder arms for door checks and closers. These holder arms are commonly employed in the art for the purpose of holding a door open to whlch 5 the closer is applied, by swinging the door open to a certain position at which point the holder armwhich usually cons stsof jointed sectionswill become frictionally locked or engaged so that the door Wlll be held in open position; but it may be released by special effort or pull on the door sufficient to overcome the-frictional hold.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved holder arm which can be applied to any door-checking closer now on the market and which consists of few' parts which are cheap to manufacture and assemble and easy; to adjust. It can be used for either right or left hand doors. A further feature is that it has no pro ecting nuts to mar the appearance or to become loose, and in case of wear all parts are interchangeable and can readily be replaced.
As stated, this holder arm may be used with various kinds of closers, and no limitation in this respect is implied.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view showing the holder arm embodied in a door check applied to a door shown open in full lines and closed in dot and dash lines.
Fig. 2 is a view of the arm partly in section. I
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Figs. fl: and 5 are detail views of the cocentric.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the eccentrio wedge.
40 Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates a door closer of any suitable type. As shown, it has a shaft 7 at the top to which the holder is applied.
The holder consists of a main arm 1, having a non-circular opening 1 fitting on the shaft of the closer, and if necessary a per foration l for connection to a ratchet with which many closers are provided. This arm 1 is jointed to another arm 8 which is pivotally attached in any suitable manner to the door casing, the whole forming a toggle, and the general arrangement being old in the art.
The present invention resides in the particular construction of the joint between the armsl and 8. The jointed end of arm 1 is recessed to form two cars 1 and 1, between which fits an eccentric 2 having a lug 2 to which the arm 8 is pivoted by a pin 9 transverse to the axis of the eccentric. The eccentric has a squared hole 2 which receives the squared part 3 of a stud shaft 3, having a circular bearing 3 on the ear 1 and a circular head bearing 3 in the ear. 1", whereby the joint may be flexed.
Adjacent the ears, the arm 1 has a squared or otherwise non-circular recess 1" to form a guide for a wedge 4 theface of which is closed and arranged to bear against the edge of the eccentric 2, and it is held at adjustment by a screw 5 tapped thru the back wall of the recess. The adjustment is such that the eccentric swinging free of the wedge up to a certain point as the toggle is straightened incident to the opening movement of the door and then the rising surface of the eccentric closes to binding contact with the wedge.
In operation, after the parts are assembled as shown, and installed on a door with a closer, the door is opened to the desired position in which it is to be held, and then y a screw driver the screw is set in tight against the wedge, pressing the wedge tightly against the eccentric whereby suflicient friction is caused between the wedge and the eccentric to hold the door in open position. The wedge and eccentric may come into contact at any desired position by adjusting the screw in or out, and when the arm is set for any particular position, the door is held open in said position until released by special pressure in the opposite direction at which time the surface of the eccentric will leave the wedge and allow the door to close freely by flexion of the toggle at the pivot 3. The wedge is preferably set slightly off the radial line, to give a more efiective bind, but this position may be varied. It will be noted that the invention provides avery neat and effective joint without any exposed nuts and without the use of compressible frictionsurfaces requiring frequent adjustment; and the only adjust-- ment necessary may be readily eflected by the screw 5', as described.
I claim:
1. A door holder comprising a pair of arms pivoted together, one arm being forked andtheother arm having an eccentric fitting between the forks and extending around the pivot, and awedge projecting between the'forks and frictionally engageable with the eccentric when the latter is turned to a certain position.
2. A door holder comprising 'a oaiir of arms pivoted together,-one. of said arms consisting of sections pivoted together, one
'of the sections being .i'orked and the otheru arm havingan eccentric fitting between the forks andextending around the pivot connecting the arms, and e'frictionmember pro nature.
