W. G. PETERKIN.
SPRING HINGE.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 8, 1902.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER G. PETERKIN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SPRING-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 724,039, dated March 31 1903;
' pp t fil d y ,1902. smart. 114,756. (Ramada) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER G. PETERKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to springhinges adapted especially for use as gate-hinges, the primary object beingto provide a hinge which will permit a gate to be opened in either direction to a position at right angles to its closed position and be automatically closed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a spring-hinge of simple and inexpensive construction embodying few parts and adapted to be readily applied to a gate.
The invention comprises a fixed member of novel construction, a movable member adapted to be attached to the gate, and a coilspring so disposed with relation to the fixed and movable members as to permit the opening of the gate in either direction and insure the automatic closing thereof.
The improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, and its novel features will be defined in the appended claim.
, In the drawings,Figure 1 is a side elevation of a spring-hinge embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a viewin perspective of the parts of the hinge before being assembled.
Corresponding parts in both figures are denoted by the same reference-characters.
One of the hinge members comprises a body portion 1, having laterally-extending perforated ears 2 and a horizontal bracket-arm 3, terminating in a depending lug 4. Projecting centrally from the outer surface of thebody portion 1 is an arm 5, having an enlarged portion 6, formed with an opening to receive one end of atubular post 7, the opposite end of which is fitted within an opening in the arm 3. A lug 8 projects upward from the arm 5 for the purpose hereinafter explained.
9 designates the other hingedmember, comprising a plate perforated to receive securingscrews and having laterally-projecting parallel ears 10, formed with perforations which register with the open ends of the tubular post 7. A headed pintle 11 extends through the post 7 and the ears 10 of the member 9.
Surrounding the tubular post 7 is a coilspring 12, one end 13 of which is bent to adapt it to contact with the lug 4. of the bracket-arm 3 and terminates in a loop 14, against which the hinge member 9 is adapted to bear. The other end 15 of the spring is bent to engage the lug 8 of the arm 5 and also terminates in a loop 16, against which the member 9 bears. It will thusbe seen that the resilient ends or arms of the spring bear against opposite sides of the hinge member 9, thus adapting the latter to be moved in either direction against the tension of one or the other of said arms to open the gate to which the member 9 is secured to a position at right angles to the body portion'l of the fixed member.
It will be noted that the lugs 4 and 8 serve as stops to limit the forward movement of the spring-arms when the member 9 is turned away from either of said arms.
The hinge constructed as thus described permits of the opening of a gate in either direction, inward or outward, to the extent of a position at right angles to its closed position and the automatic closing thereof under the tension of one or the other of the springarms.
I would have it understood that the invention'is not restricted to all of the details herein shown and that I reserve the right to make such Variations in the construction as may fall within the scope of the following claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A spring-hinge comprising a fixed member having parallel bracket-arms, each provided Wlth fl projecting lug, a tubular post supported between said arms, a movable member having ears formed with perforations registering with the open ends of said post, a pintle extending through said ears and post, and a coil-spring surrounding the post and having extensions adapted to bearagainst said lugs and movable hinge member.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name in the presence of the subscribing wit nesses.
WALTER G. PETERKIN. Witnesses:
