DOOR-CHECK.
- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mar, 6, 191'},
Application filed July 7, 1916. Serial No. 107,984..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER S. VMCGUIRE,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Shadyside, in the county of Belmont, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvementsin door checks, and has for its object to provide a device of this character constructed in such a manner that the door will close without noise or jar.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character constructed in such a manner that the piston head will create a suction within the cylinder so that the door will be permitted to close without the customary jar and noise.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having means whereby the suction of the piston head in one direction will act to retard the closing of a door. V
With these and other objects this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view through the device.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing 1 indicates the cylinder, in which is mounted a piston head 2, said head comprising a cupped disk 3, which is held between the plates 4, the concave of the disk being directed toward the cap 5 whichis engaged on the inner end of the cylinder 1, and is provided with an opening 6 for slidably engaging the piston rod 7, said opening being of such size as to permit the air to freely escape as the piston head moves toward the cap 5.
The outer end of the cylinder 1 is provided with a cap 8, said cap having an opening 9 formed therein, said opening serving to permit the air to enter the cylinder as the piston head moves inwardly, the entrance of air being controlled through the opening 9 by the screw 10, which has its inner end adapted to coact with the opening to increase or decrease the passage of air therethrough, said screw beingsupported by a bracket ll-carried by the cap 8.
Fixed to the cap 8 is a bar 12, said bar having a longitiudinal slot 13 formed therein for slidably engaging the bolt 14 carried by the bracket 15, said bracket being suitably connected to the top sill of the door frame. A winged nut 16 is engaged on the bolt to hold the bar in place and ismanipulated to hold the bar frictionally engaged between the washers 16, the frictional engagement between the bar and washers when'sliding resists the sliding movement of the bar to some extent. I
The inner end of the piston rod 7 is provided with a hook 17 which pivotally engages the arm 18 of the angle bracket 19, said bracket having its arm 20 suitably secured to the door 21.
When the door 21' is opened the cylinder 1 swings outwardly, and afterthe door is released the same swings inwardly under the action of the usual springs, whereby the piston head 2 moves toward the cap 5, and creates a suction on'theopposite side while the air is discharging through the opening 6, thus permitting the door to close'without a jar. The movement of the piston head 2 can be regulated upon adjusting the screw 10 so that the volume of air entering the opening 11 can be regulated.
It has been the practice heretofore to compress air within the 1 cylinder, but in the present instance the piston, head is controlled by suction. Thus it will be seen that the piston head acts directly against the outer atmosphere, thus causing the pressure to be equalized on both sides of the piston head.
What is claimed is 1. A door check comprising a cylinder, a piston head operated in the cylinder, a piston rod connected with the head, means for pivotally connecting one end of the rod to a door, a bar rigidly connected with one end of the cylinder, means for slidably and pivotally supporting the bar, said means having associated therewith means for regulat ing the sliding resistance of the bar.
2. A door check comprising a cylinder, a piston slidable in said cylinder and having a head, means for pivotally connecting one end of the piston to the door, a bar carried of the piston head is being discharged and by the other end of the piston, means for when the door is closing. 0 slidahly and pivotally connecting the bar to In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, the door frame, said means having means in the presence of two Witnesses.
