i r!// {I'll H11 ll mu run/r111:
Be it known that l, SAMUEL B. Coon, a
citizen of the l nited States. residing at limb 1 rel. in the county oi Jones and Sinhol' .\lis 5 sissippi, have invented :1 new and u vi'ul lm [Movement in nshbonrds. l' whi h the l d lowing is a. specification.
My invention is on improvement in the class of wnshbonrds whose scrubbing surl'm-e. is formed of a series oi rectangular bars urranged transversely and held detuclmbly in The invention is illustrated in the aecompanying drawing in which,
Figure l is a. perspective View of my invention complete. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken centrally through the board. Fig. 4 illustrates an arrangement of the transverse scrub bars slightly dilierent from that shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a erspective view of one of the scrub bars. l ig. 6 shows the parts of the clamping device removed from the board but in operative relation to each other. Fig. 7 shows a slightly different form of scrubbing bars.
The frame of my washboard A is composed of the side bars 1 and 2 rigidly secured together at their up er ends by the top bars 3 and 4, and a board serving as the soap holder 5, interposed centrally between said top bars.
The side burs l and .2 are provided in their inner faces with deep grooves a which extend from their lower ends up to the bar l, and are of uniform diameter throughout their len th.
'lhe scrubbing portion of my board is formed of u series oi scrub burs li. 'lhese bars are preferably square in (-ross section as shown in Figs. 2 and t and extend tramsvcrscly across the washboard. At their ends they are provided with tenons 11 whose sides are inclined to the side of the main portions of the bars. These reduced portions are of a size to be snugly received into the recesses a of the side bars, and when thus received with their sides inclined as just described the corthe side bars of the frame. l l l ihirumpled .wrubbing b ard or lflltliji 'lhese square bars are held securely in engagement with each other by the upper and loner sirnh or holding bur T :ind \\lll4'll prelerubl nre l'ornn-d u -hou n. are provided on their nds with l u n imt lnr to the tenons b of the square bars 15, and also adapted to be received into the groove-s 'ih siburs a of the side bars of the board.
Each of the bars 7 and is provided ith a corner normally so disposed as to engage and bear against the adjacent corner of the upper and lower scrub bars B respectively, to hold all the said bars in engagement with enrh other. The bar 7 is provided on its top with a list face which its firmly against the bar 4. The lower her 8 is flat on its under sidev and to the latter is secured a rightinigulnr plate 0 which forms put of a clamping device see especially l ig. 6.
A portion of the clumping device indicated by Figs. c c is practically a clip, the same being pivoted by screw it, to the outer sides of the bars 2 and the bent portion passing over the bars and in front of the portion 0 of the angular plates 0. The side bar 2 is preferably hinged at 9, and thus the clamping devices 6 serve not only for holding the scrub bing bars, including the top and bottom bars 7 and S, in due position, but also to look all the parts together, to wit: the side bars 1 and 2 and the bars constituting the. scrubbing surface. By raising the clip, comprisiug the parts indicated by a, o, the some will be disengaged from the nuguhir plates 0' so llml nil the bars may he slid (lu\\n\\'1lr(ll and removed from the side bars l and 2.
it will be seen that when the exposed ror' uers oi the scru b burs ll have become worn. the bars may be taken not. turned one fourth ol 9.- rerolution and rephued in position. This will provide the board with two new scrubbing surfaces. Hence it is seen that one of my wnshbmirds is equivalent to four of the ordinary kind. Moreover when all four ol the corners of the scrub burs B are worn oil. a new set of bars (nu be supplied at at lrilling ners of the said main sections of the bars will 1 be presented to each other as illustrated in Fig. l, the grooves a in the side bursbeing of unil'orm diameter throughout, and extending to the loner ends of the side burs. the tenons ii of the si'rubbing burs, ll, nn\ be readily inserted and slid up in the grooves to form cost which will again render the board |Htl(' tirnlly now.
By hinging the side bar 3 in the manner shown. it may be opened in ullun our one or all ol' the scrubbing bar in be readily re moved or turned us may e required.
From Fig. it will be wen that the grooves a are considerably deeper than the length of t Fig. 2. would be worn so irregularly and althe tenous 1/ ol the scrub bars. The open portion ol' these grooves terms a passageway downward through the sides ol' the board to the bottom ol' the tub, lor the grit and :-ediment that toreed llOII'l very dirty material, for it will be seen that when the t-lothes saturated with water are forced over the top face of the board, the water will naturally be torred out ol" the eloth into the angular grooves t'orlued between the rub bars, and this water together with the grit and dirt whieh it dislodges from the clothes will find an easy way ol t'srnpt along said grooves to their ends whirh open into the groove. (1' ol' the side bars through whit'h latter the grit is conveyed to the bottom of the tub and is not intermixed with the other clothing in the wash.
Fig. 4 shows a slightly ditl'ereut way of arsurface for the board, in which ease the edges 3 if brought directly together as illustrated in.
ways more at the eenter of the bar than at their ends, so that they would not lit together and the water and sediment dislodged by rubbing would run through between the bars instead of being eonveyed along them to the This lapping ol' the bar B may be easily provided. for to any degree by simply making the bars in the form of an oblong re tangular in cross sevtion as illustrated in l'lg' 7.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Leti tors Patent is:
In a washboard ot the elass indicated, the
longitudinal grooves extendiu to the lower ends, of a. part intervening suc h side bars and constituting the scrubbing surface of the board. sin-h part having tenons adapted to lit and slide in the grooves of the side bars, elamping devices comprising rightangular plates attzwhed to the lower edge of the srrubbing part, and (lips pivoted to the side bars and adapted, when in normal position, to overlap the lower portions of said plates and thus lock the scrubbing part in place, as shown and deseribed.
