N. M. PLATiI OF NORTH FAIRFIELD, OHIO.
I 7 Letters Patent No. 85,127, dated December 22, 186.8. I I
INIPROVEMENT IN GATES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sameb To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, N. M. PLATT, of North Fair field, in the county of H11i'oi1,-an(l State of Ohio, have iuvented .a-.oertain new and useful Improvement'in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a opened.
Figure i-represents a pivotdiinge, of which 0 is the pivot, and-D the step in which the pivot rests. A are standards, between which an upper bar of the gate A is placed, the lower edge of the bar resting upon the rollers B, as shown in fig. 2, and upon which the gate rolls backward and forward, in closing and opening.
- The practical operation of this arrangement is as follows:
The step D is driven into the post F. The standard is then placed in position, and the gate hung thereon, between them, as shown in fig. 2, with the lower edge of the bar upon the rollers, as above said. In
this position the gate. is suspended upon the pivot,
and in order to open it, it is rolled back in the dirty tion indicated by the dotted lines a, until the upright cleat b comes to the hinge. At this point the gate is swung roundlengthwise to the-roadway.
The special advantage claimed for this device over others is, greater security to the gate, the bar of which being hcldbetween the standards, it cannot be easily moved laterally; hence hogs and other stock are not able to force it open, on reaching over it, or rubbing against the lower side, Also, as each pair of standards is placed distant apart from the others, the gate Will be more generally balanced, and less liable to rock on opening it, and therefore require less eflbrt to roll.
it back.
I am aware that sliding gates have been hung upon central pivots or rollers, having standards or arms eqrv tending from such pivots, and between said arms the gate is held in position; hence, I do not claim broadly this method of hanging and supporting gates, but the arrangement herein, described.
What I claim as. my improvement, and desire to secure by'Letters Patent, is- I The deep-slotted standards A, as arranged in relation to each, and in combination with the rollers B and pivot, for the purpose specified.
