Description

UNITED rSTATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. YOUNoLovE, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR or ONE-HALF To THOMAS B. HICKS, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
DOOR-CHECK.
No. 851,19s.
Specification of Letters Patent. Y
Patented-April 23, 19o?.
'Application filed May 23,1906. Serial No. 318,333.`
new and useful DoorCheck, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.'
This invention relates to vdoor checks and particularly to checks used in connection with the doors of closed carriages Such as hacks,l coups and landaus and the like, the present invention being in the nature of an improvement upon the construction set forth in a co-pending application hled by me March 29, 1906, Serial Number 308,802.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide means for preventing the door from swinging open in case of failure to securely latch the 'door in the act of closing the same.y
It frequently happens that in closing the door of a vehicle, through carelessness or by 4full lines and closed in dotted lines.
.reasonof the latch failing to operate properly, the door is left unlatched and as the vehicle starts the door is often thrown open leaving the same' liable to come in contact with any kind of an obstruction such as a post or tree box with a result that the door is torn from its hinges. By means of the con- -struction hereinafter described, the door even when not properly latched, is prevented from swinging open, and furthermore, when the door is thrown open all the! way by hand, said door is cheeked in time to prevent the Same coming in injurious contact with the adjacent wheel of the Vehicle.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and. arrangement of parts as hereinafter fully described, illustrated and claimed'.
ln'the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is an inside elevation of a carriage door and a portion of the-body of the vehicle, showing the improved door check applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal section through the same, showing the door open in Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the guide rail showing the detent or catch.
Referring to the drawings 1 designatesthe door of a carriage or likevehicle embodying the Side uprights 2 and 3, while 4 designates the hinge post or upright forming a portion of the vehicle body to which the door is hinged as shown at 5.
' In carrying out the present invention, I employ a tie bar 6 which extends horizontally across the doorl between the side uprights 2 -and 3, the outer end of said tie bar being secured to the adj acent upright 3 by means of a suitable fastener 7 and the inner end of said tie'bar being provided with a tee-shaped extension 8 secured to the uprightQ'by means of the fasteners 9.` The tie bar thus ties the Side uprights of the-door together and forms an eflicient brace for the door as a whole. 4
Connected to the vehicle body is a hinge piece embodying a stationary member 10 secured permanently to the ,body by screws or other suitable fasteners as indicated in Fig. 2 and the detachable 'section 11, the members 10 and 11 being constructed to form an eye 12 which pivotally receives one end of an open center link 13, the opposite or outer end of which straddles a guide rail 14 secured to the door. The link l13 is further provided at its outer end with a runner 15 in the form of aneye which embraces the guide vrail 14 and slides lengthwisethereof during the opening and closing movement of the door.
The guide rail 14 consists preferably of a stout rod round in cross section and having its oppositeends bent to the Same Side thereof and secured to the door b passing screws orother suitable fasteners t erethrough and also through the tie bar 6. into the door. The guide rail 14 is provided in its inner side Witha recess 16 extending lengthwise therein and forming a pocket in which operates a detent or catch 17 in the form of a spring secured at one end 18 withinthe recess and provided at a'suitable point with a shoulder 19 which normally projects beyond the lateral plane of the inner surface of the guide rail as shown in Fig. 2 while the extremity of said catch is off set outwardly to form a proj ecting point 20. It will be seen that as the door is moved inward to its closed position, the eye or runner 15 rides over and passes the shoulder 19 and is engaged thereby sothat TOO even if the door be left unlatched, the said to bear against the door to overcome the spring tension of the catch or detent 1.7 whereupon the said catch will recede into the pocket 16 and allow the door to be opened. The inwardly extending inner end 21 of the guide rail constitutes'a stop shoulder against which the eye or runner 15 strikes when the door reaches the limit of its outward movement thus preventing the door from ycoming in contact with the adjacent wheel which is shown at 22.
The guide rail 14 may be made of any suit? able size and the catch or detent 17 may be made of any required stiffness so as to effectively engage the eye or runner 15 to prevent the accidental opening or' the door when left unlatched, and also to prevent the link from rattling when the door is closed.
claim:
1. A check for preventing a vehicle doorI from striking against the'adjacent Wheel, the same being located adjacent to the hinged edge of the doorand embodying a hinge piece,
a guide, a link pivotally connected to the hinge' piece and having a sliding engagement with' the guide, and a spring vwhich acts at a certain point in the movement ofthe door to*v l resist and retard the movement of the link and also yields under excess pressure to allow further movement of the link.
2. Acheck for a vehicle door embodying a link connecting the vehicle door and body to limit the opening movement 'of the door, and means acting on the link at a certain point in the movement of the door to hold the door closed or approximately so with a frictional resistance which may be overcome by pressure against the door.
1n testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. THOMAS J.' YOUNGLOVE.
