D. MCKENZIE- PBNGIL SHARPENER.

DONALD MCKENZIE, OF SOUTH DUNEDIN, NEW ZEALAND.
PENCIL-SHARPENEH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 23,1907.
Application filed August 29,1905. Serial No. 276,259.
To a whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DONALD MCKENZIE, of South Dunedin, New Zealand, town clerk, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sharpeners for sharpening pencils, in particular to sharpeners which comprise a V-shaped channel in which are located the sharpening means, and is more especially intended for sharpening slate-pencils.
The leading feature of the invention is the special construction of the V-channel and of the sharpening means therein.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan of the sharpener enlarged. Fig. 2 is an end view of same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line A B in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view of the sharpener (re duced size) in position on a slate.
The sharpener 1 is made of sheet metal, preferably steel, and comprises a channel, the sides 4 5 of which form in cross-section the shape of the letter V. From the topmost edges of the channel depend legs 2 3, which are preferably about twice as long as the depth of the V-channel. The legs 2 3 have their ends turned outward, asshownin Fig. 2, and are adapted to be sprung over and grip the frame of a slate 9, as shown in Fig. 4.
The sides 4 5 of the V-channel have a series of parallel transverse cutters 6 punched or otherwise suitably formed in the sidesof said channel, leaving corresponding parallel transverse slits 7 in said sides slightly in front of the cutters. The edges of the cutters 6, as will be seen on reference to Figs. 1 and 3, all face in the same direction, the cutters 6 being bent up from the slits 7 at an acute angle with the plane of the sides 4 5. The cutters and slits on one side 5 are preferably slightly in advance of the cutters and slits on the other side 4. The cutters 6 and slits 7 extend nearly the width of the sides of the channel 4 5, leaving a gutter 8 at the bottom of the channel.
In operation the end of the pencil is drawn backward and forward and rotated in the channel, so that each backward stroke draws the end against the cutters, the edges of which rapidly form the end to a point. The dust or scrapings fall through the slits 7 or into the gutter 8, whence they may be readily removed.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A pencil-sharpenerV-shaped in crosssec tion having integral therewith gripping-legs depending therefrom, and a series of parallel transverse cutters formed in the sides thereof, leaving corresponding slits therein, said cutters being bent up from said slits at an acute angle with the plane of said sides said cutters and slits extending nearly the width of said sides and the cutters and slits in one side being slightly in advance of those in the other, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
DONALD MCKENZIE.
