EXERQBSENG Specification of Letters Patent.
APPARATUS.-
Patented April 23, 1907.
Application filed November 16,1905. Serial Nb. 287,667.
To dill whom it may concern:
Be it known that '1, JOHN HARVEY KEL 'LOGG, a citizen of the United States, residing atIthe city ofv Battle Creek, county of Calhoun, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Exercising Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
, geous for other uses. v I
This inventionrelates to'improv'ements in exercising'apparatus. i
"It relates articularly to an im roved dumb-bell, alt ough adapted andad vanta- The main object of this invention is'to pro-' vide an improved dumb-bell adapted to vibrate when in use.
I j fromthe detailed description to follow.
Further objects and objects relating to de tails of construction willydefinitely appear I accomplishthe' objects of. my invention by the devices andmeans describedin the following specification. l
The invention is clearly defined, and'pointed out in the claims.
-. A structure embodying the'features (if my invention'is clearly illustrated inthe accompa ying drawings, forming a part of. this specificatiomin which .1.
' ure 1 is a side elevatlon of my improved i F1 dumb-bell, partially in longitudinal section,- to show the structural dtai s; andEigrQ'i's a transverse section taken on a line corres 0nding to line 2-2 of Fig.1, thepadding'f 'eing omitted, showing the structural details.
In the drawings similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several Referring tothe drawings, A is an electric motorinclosed in a. suitable casin yforming one of the dumb-bell balls. 'A'ho low ban;
dle or gri Bis secured to the motor-casin This han le preferably consists. of a tube i of metal, having a suitable covering b prefer bel ably padded, as illustrated. The other dumb- I O, which is threaded upon'the end of the tube.
' b. A plate, as 0, having an inwardly pro' jecting annular threaded flange c, 1s thread-L all y padded covering b "is secured oven-these ed into the outer end of the core'C. I About the core 0 is a wood ring or covering" CE.
h red upon the core byscreWs, as arranged through; the plate c; 1 The parts, preferably b tacking to the'innei: endof the wood ri ,as illustrated. Within the core C is a caring for one end of the;
allpreferably consistsof 'a metal core shaftDl This shaft is preferably made up of sections secured together by, a slip-j oint D for convenience in assembling the structure. A weight E5 is arranged upon the shaft D in a mannertothrow the same out of balance, so 'that when the shaft is rotated by the motor the dumb-bell is vibrated. This I find to be a veryeffective exercising device,
as the muscles in addition to the benefitof movement secured by the use of the dumbbell are vibrateddn a very effective manner.
-This is particularly effective, as by using the dumbbell in the-regular Way there is a con- .stant change of the osition of the muscles, and they are vibrate at the same time.
'1 preferably pad the dumb-bell ball as described, so that'it may be used in administering movement cure or massage treat ments by applying the same to the arts to 'be treated. This couldbedoneif t e same were not padded; but it would not-be as satisfactory.
I have illustrated and describedmy'imroved dumb-bell in detail in the form preerred by-me on account of its structural Iam' ' of a chambered core of metal threaded upon said handle, 'a late having an annular threaded flanget eaded into the outer end of said core, a ring of wood arranged on saidcore and secured thereto by screws arranged through said plate, and a padded covering; a'
shaft hected bya s'li oint; a bearin for one secor said motor made up of sections contionof saidsha t arranged in'sai core; and a weight inclos ed by'said core arrangedon said shaft to throw the same out of balance, for
the purpose specified.
b-;b ll .comprising an electric metori inclosed i'in a casing forming one of the =-durnb-bell"balls'; a hollow, handle or grip secured-tosaid motor casing; a ball consisting of a-eharnhered core of metal threaded upon .said handlaiuand a covering-"for said core; a
nected by a slip-joint; a bearing for one see- I p I I0 shaft for said motor made up of sectlons contion of said-shaft arranged insaid core ;and a weight inclosed by said core arranged on said shaft to throw the same out of. balance, for
the purpose specified.
3. A dumb-bell comprising an electric mo tor inclosed in a casing forming one of the dumb-bell-balls; a' hollow handle or gripsecured to said motor-casing a chambered ball threaded u on said handle; a shaft for said motor ma e up of sections connected by a slip-joint; a bearing for one section of said shaft arranged in said chambered ball; anda weight inclosed by said chambered ball arranged on said shaft to throw the same out of balance, for the urpose specified.
4. A dumb-be l comprising'an electric mo- -tor inclosed in a casing forming one of the dumb-bell balls; a padded ball having a chamber therein; a hollowhandle or grip connecting said motor-casing to" said chambered ball; a shaft for-said motor arranged through said handle; a bearing for said shaft arranged in said chambered ball; and a weight inclosed by said chambered ball ar ranged on said shaft to throw the same out of balance, for the purpose specified; y
5. A dumb-bell comprising an; electric motor inclosed in a casing forming one of the dumb-bell balls a ball having a chamber therein; a hollow handleor gri connecting said motor-casing to said cham ered ball; a
shaft for said motor arranged through said handle; a bearing for said shaft arranged in saidchambered ball; and a weight inclosed by said chambered ball arranged' on said shaft to throw the same out of balance, for
the purpose specified.
6. A dumb-bell comprising an electric m0- tor inclosed in a casing forming one of the dumb-bell balls a padded ball; a handle or grip connecting said motor-casing thereto; a shaft for said motor; and a weight arranged on said shaft tothrow the same out of balance, for the purpose s ecified.
