Description

A; s. s'uEsMAN.
GOLF' CLUB.
APPLicATloN min MAR.3I.1911.
Patented JulieVv 3, l919'.
I INVENTOR, ZM 3. famme/z,
WITNESS:
A TTORNEY.
Acitizzen of the Asn B.' Sussman, or srnme'lrELD, Messnonusn'rrs.
GOLF-CLUB.
T4 all 'whom it may concern.' Y
Beit. known that I, ASA B. Snrlsimx, a
resident of -Springli eld, in the county of Hampden' and State ofMassachusetts, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Golf-Clubs, of lwhich thefollowing is a full, clear, and exactdescrip'tion.
This invention relates to improvements in golf-clubs, and more particularly to the grip portion thereof.
The success of a golf stroke depends 'largely upon the manner in which the club left hand rasps the club too tightly, the ball l v has a ten ency to swerve isgripped with the hands. t is the almost universal practice to employ the left hand above the right in making a' shot; and if the tothe right, and Y t'oo tight grip by the other hand causes the ball to go to the left ofthe direction aimed at.
This invention is based on the idea that if the portion oftheclub to be gripped by one of the hands is so made that it can revolve on the shaft, the liability of making a faulty stroke will be greatly lessened. For instance, if theplayer is in the habit of grasping the club too hard with his left hand, this` fault .will bediminished if the upper part of the portion of the club to be grasped'is made with the capability of revolving on the shaft for the reason that the left hand is thereby deprived of the power to twist the club'out of its best operative position.
An exempliication of the .invention as it ias been snecessnlly carried out is here-inw iter described in connection with the aerox-n penying drawings and is covered by claims. i
'In the drawings Figure l is a side view showing a golf club comprising the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal seetional view of the portion of the club at which the device of this invention is provided.
Fig. 3 is a partial. longitudinal seetiona view showing a modification to be. hereinafter referred to.
In the drawing?, A represents the shaft ofg' a golf club of whichB and C arethe grips or upper portions of the shaft to be grasped A 'immovable on or vrelatively to theshaft,
While the upper grip portion C is freely rotatable about the shaft,be1ng made as an Specification of Letters Patent.

able material or combinationsl of material.
This grip may consist of ametallic tube o, of circular cross section and` to loosely tit about the round portion of the shaft which is'encircled thereby; and provided with a covering or. wrapping b of suitable material, such, for instance, as leather.
A metallic washerd is provided to encircle the shaft at the upper end of the fixed erip member Bend on which the lower en' of the revoluble grip member C may rest; and a short sleeve section or errule f is shown mas fastened by the pin g about the upper end of the shaft and forms a limiting shoulder for the revoluble grip for theqprevention of end, that is providing externai c new threadsand providing a binding nut between the end of the 4the shoulder forming le on the shaft i and a thumb nut revoluble grip an When the nuts are loose-relatively tf.) the endL of the rip, the latter may freely revolve,
while on tne other handvthe turning down of Athe nuts will be effective to rinly bind thc grip against rotationor other movement relatively to the'stick.
Inversion or reversal or the relations the grip members may be made within scope of this 'invention also. var changes to details of constructies; n
made without departing from or sserneing 4E any of the advantages of the invention.'
cla1rn:-
1. A golf club having at the upper portion, i of the shaft a grip member which is revolu blc relatively to the shaft.V
2. -A'gol' stick comprising a shaft having a'strikingmember on one end 'thereof and pair of hand grips on the opposite end there of, said hand grips being longitudinali;- spaced from each other on sai shaft, the upper one of said hand gripsbeing mounted on sadshat for rotary movement and the other of said hand grips being fixed to the shaft against relative movement thereon. one of said handi gri s being designe-Liebe rig t hand of theplaver and the other of said grips being be tion fast to the club shaft, an adjacent section revolubly meunted 0n szrdshaft, and means to 'eonne said revoluble section aganstlongtudinal movement. on the shaft.
