To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J osnrn B. BARIANI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Encampzrnent, in the county of Carbon and State of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protectors for Bucket-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention is a protecting-collar for use on the Leschen-button, a patented device for attaching or hanging buckets to their supportin g-wheels,which travel t. pon elevated ca bles of tramways for the transportation of ore.

The Leschen button is a cast metal hanger consisting of a recessed cross-bar connected to a disk or plate by a neck. This neck is subject to wear to a greater extent than the remaining portion of the device, and owing to this wear it becomes materially weakened and frequently breaks. The wear of the necks of these devices also permits the buckets which they support to swing and strike the towers supporting the elevated cables, thereby pulling the towers over or breaking the cable or doing other damage to the tramway system.

The object of my invention is to overcome the above-iulentioned difliculties in this device, and I accomplish it by surrounding the neck and the plate or disk of the device by a malleable-iron. protecting casing or covering which is case-hardened after it is applied, so that it will eil'ectively 'withstand the wear and will materially lessen the danger of the neck of the device or button breaking.

Vl ith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features hereinafter fljlly described and claimed, and ill? strated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the Leschen button with my improved protecting device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which my in" proved protector is made.

liefcrring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes the Leschen button, consisting of the crossbar 2, the circular plate or disk 3, and the connecting-neck 4, which latter is of substantially rectangr lar form in cross-section, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3. My protector may be applied to either new or old and worn buttons, and in preparing the latter for the application of the protector I preferably file down the opposite sides 5 of the neck and form in the top of the disk or plate 3 a transversely-extending groove or channel 6.

My improved protector 7 is formed from a single piece or sheet of malleable iron or other suitable metal, which sheet is cut, stamped, or otherwise formed into the form shown in Fig. 4 that is, into the two arms 8, projecting in parallel relation from one edge of a connecting-band 9. The band or strip 9 is adapted to be bent around the neck 4 of the button, so that it engages the tiled faces or sides 5, and the two arms 8 are adapted to be bent up around the edges of the disk 3 at diametrically opposite points and to have their ends seat in the groove or channel 6, as clearly shown in the drawings. The arms 8 are so arranged upon the'band 9 that when the latter is bent around the neck to provide a surrounding and protecting .collar said arms will be oppositely disposed and will effectively secure said cell a1 upon the button. The protector is more effectively secured, preferably, by means of a rivet or similar fastening 10, passed through the neck and the opposite sides of the collar or band 9, and by two rivets or the like 11, passed through the disk 3 and the portions of the arms 8 above and below said disk, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. As above stated, the protector is casehardened after it is applied to the button, so that it will be more effective in withstanding wear and shocks which tend 'to break the neck of the cast-metal button. This protector may be applied easily and at small expense to either old or new buttons, and it will effectively prevent the wearing away of the neck of the button and the consequent weakening and breaking of the same and also wrecks upon the tramway system due to the wearing away of the button-necks.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination with a cast-metal bucket hanger or fastener of the character described having a connecting-neck, of a case-hardened protector secured to said neck.

2. The combination with a cast-metal bucket hanger or fastener of the character described. having a connecting-neck, of a protecting-band surrounding said neck and a fastening passed through said neck and said collar.

3. The combination With a bucket hanger or fastener of the character described having a plate or body and a neck projecting therefrom, of a protector arranged upon said neck and having arms engaged with said plate or body.

4. The combination With a bucket hanger or fastener of the character described having a plate or body and a neck projecting therefrom, of a protecting-collar surrounding said neck and having oppositely-disposed arms bent around said plate or body.

5. The combination With a bucket hanger or fastener of the character described having a plate or body and a neck projecting therefrom, of a protecting-collar surrounding said neck and having oppositely-disposed arms bent around said plate or body and fastening devices passed through said arms in the plate or body and through said neck and its pro-l tecting-collar.

6. The combination With a bucket hanger or fastener of the character described having 1 the bar 2, the plate 3 and the connectingneck 4, said plate being formed in its top with a seat, of a protector comprising a band bent around said neck and formed With arms bent over said plate at opposite points and having their ends engaged With the seat in said late, and fastening devices for securing said protector upon said hanger or fastener, substantially as shown and described.
