P, MOBP'NNPTT. lWAGON Po-LP: TIP.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 5i 1902.
N0 MODEL Fuji- Mom' l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PATRICK MCBENNETT, OF MARENGO, ILLINOIS.
WAGON-POLE'TIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 719,840, dated February 3, 1903. Application led July 5, 1902. Serial No. 114,441. (No model.)
T LZZ whom, t may concern: i
Be it known that I, PATRICK MoBENNET'r,
` readily be attached to the end of a pole and eectually retain the neck-yoke ring to prevent its slipping.
Another object is to provide an integral spring-loop formed with the clip to which the neck-yoke ring may be readily attached and.,
detached.
The peculiar manner of accomplishing the desired result will be specifically described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Y Figure l is a perspective view of the clip constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the same.
The reference-numeral 1 designates a pole, on the end of which is secured an approximately U-shaped clip 2, at the forward extension of which is an enlarged head 3, the purpose of which will be explained hereinafter. Formed integral with the lower arm of the clip is a spring arm or tongue 4, which is formed by opening the free end of the lower arm, as at 5, so that the tongue 4 is bent upon the same at an approximately parallel plane thereto and abuts against a depending nger 6, formed near the end of the clip, so that a loop 7 is provided, into which the neck-yoke ring is designed to fit. The head 3 and the outer contour of the iinger 6 merge into a curved unbroken line, so as to prevent the reins from catching on the end of the tongue and permit them to slip off. In order to fasten the clip to the tongue, I provide bolts 8 and 9, which pass through the clip and through the tongue and are secured by means of nuts 10 and 11. The bolt 9 is provided withadepending extension 12. The extended portion 12 of the bolt 9 passes through an opening 13 in the spring-tongue 4, and on the end thereof is a head 14, which cooperates with the finger 6 to limit the downward movement of the tongue 4. This head 14 is also designed to protect the spring in the event of the pole `becoming broken or dropping to the earth.
In order to attach the neck-yoke to the tongue of the wagon or vehicle, it will only be necessary to spring the tongue 4: to cause the ring to pass into the loop, thus eifectually holding it in engagement with the tongue.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a device constructed in accordance with this invention can be readily applied to the tongue of a Wagon and will eifectually perform the service for which-'it is intended.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- A clip for vehicle-tongues, comprising an approximately U-shaped member having a finger on one side thereof, and a spring-tongue formed integral with one arm of the U -shaped member, the upper end of the tongue engaging the finger to form a loop.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PATRICK MCBENNETT.
