To all w/wm, it may concern.- 5 Be it known that'l, EARNEST FRANCIS OAVELIER, a citizen of the United States, re- I siding at Jacksonville, in the county of Dui val and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Can Cutter and Spout, of which the following is a specification. I The invention relates to improvements in combined can cutters and spouts. l The object of the present invention is to I improve the construction of combined can cutters and spouts, and to provide a simple, inexpensive and efficient device adapted to open a can and provide a spout for pouring off the liquid contents of the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combined can cutter and spout which when in use on a canwill be locked against both inward and outward movement and which when a can is empty may be readily detached for use on another can.
l "vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that, various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing I any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a combined can cutter and spout constructedin accordance with this invention and shown applied to a can. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a s de elevation of the combined can cutter and spout, illustrating the arrangement of the longitudinal space and the transverse slot by means of which the device is interlocked with a can. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 5 is a similar view. the device being shown inverted.

1 designates a cylindrical spout provided at its lower end with a series of depending tapering cutters 2, formed integral with the spout and tapered and pointed, as shown, to l provide inclined cutting edges 3. The cutters 2 are adapted to pierce the top of a can 4 and partially sever a circular portion 5 from the same. The device is provided at one l side with a vertical longitudinal slot or opening 6, which spaces the cutters and which is adapted when the device is inserted in the top or other portion of a can to leave an unsevered portion or neck 7, wl" connects the circular partiallysevered por i011 with the can.
The spout is provided on its exterior with a horizontal aru ular flange 8, which is adapted to rest upon the can and which forms a horizontal shoulder for engaging the same. The horizontal flange may be soldered, brazed,. or otherwise secured to the exterior of the spout, and the device is provided be low the flange with a horizontal transverselydisposed slot 9, extending from the vertical longitudinal slot and adapted when the device is partially rotated to receive the unsevered connecting portion or neck 7, as illus trated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The transverse slot 9 may be extended from either side of the vertical lon itudinal slot or space but it is preferably arranged, as shown, so to permit the device to be partially rotated to the right to interlock it with the can. After the device is partially rotated to bring the coiniecting portion or neck 7 within the slot 9 the circular portion 5 is pressed downward into the can against the slotted side of the device, as shown. The device is then locked against downward or outward movement; but may be readily detached by par tially rotating it to carry the connecting portion or neck 7 out of the transverse groove.
In practice the device will be provided with a suitable cap or cover, and it will re main in position on a can until the contents of the same are consumed. The device will then be removed and maybe used on another can. The spout projects from the can a suf licient distance to enable the contents of the can to be conveniently poured out, and it may be any desired length to secure this re sult.
W hile the described construction admits of making the article out of sheet metal, it is obvious that the whole may be cast out of one piece, if found desirable.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the class described comprising a spout provided with depending spaced cutters arranged to partially sever a portion of the metal of a can and leave the partiallysevered portion within the spout, said device TIO being also provided with means for interlockingit with the partially-severed portion.
2. A device of the class described comprising a spout provided with depending cutters adapted to pierce a can, said device being also provided with longitudinal and trans verse slots, the longitudinal slot spacing the cutters and extending upwardly from the lower terminals of the cutters to leave an unsevercd portion of the can within the spout, and the transverse slot extending from the longitudinal slot and arranged to re ceive such unsevered portion, wlicreby the device is interlocked with the can.
3. A device of the class described comprising a substantially cylindrical spout pro vided with depending cutters, and having a longitudinal slot spacing the cutters to leave an unsevered portion of the can within the spout, said device being also provided with a my own I have hereto a'llixe d my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
