DETACHABLE SPOUT AND CAN-OPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,475, dated October 14, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL W. GREEN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Detachable Spout and Can-Opener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in detachable spouts and can-openers; and the object of my invention is to produce a simple and efficient device by means of which a sealed can may be easily opened, and which will afford a convenient spout through which the liquid in the can may be poured.
To this end my invention consistsin atube having one end provided with pointed members which may be easily driven into a can, and which will cut from the can a piece corresponding in size to the size of the tube. This construction will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the application of the device to a can.
The can opener and spout A comprises a centralhollow body portion A havingpointed members A arranged opposite each other, and having a suitable cover B to protect the tube and the contents of the can in which it is inserted from dust and insects. The members A are formed integrally 011 one end of the body portion A of the tube, said members being cut away and provided with converging edges, which meet at the point a. The lower ends of the members A terminate in sharp points a, and the edges of the memhere between the points co and the point a are provided with cutting-edges a said cutting-edges extending the entire distance from the point a to the points a.
A rib a is formed around the body portion A of the tube A, said rib being located a little above the members A The body portion A of the tube immediately below the rib a is corrugated or roughened, as shown at a so as to enable the tube to hold its position in the top of a can when once inserted therein. The tube A is made, preferably,with tapering sides, as shown; but it is obvious that it may be made with straight sides, if desired.
The device is operated as follows: WVhen a can, as O, is to be opened, the members A are forced through the soft end of the can near the edge till the rib a rests upon the can top. This operation will cuta piece from the can corresponding in size to the inner diameter of the tube, and the roughened surface a of the tube will cling tenaciously to the can and hold the tube in position. The piece cut from the can will be forced upward in the tube, and when the contents of the can are poured out the piece will be ejected from the tube. The tube will form a convenientspout, and to have it work perfectly a suitable 7o air-vent should be made in the can top.
In an ordinary can it will be found most convenient to insert the tube in the can-top near one side of the can, as shown in Fig. 3; but it is obvious that it may be driven in any portion of the can desired, and that the tube may be made in any desired size, the size being regulated by the size of the can to which it is to be applied.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a detachable spout and can-opener consisting, essentially, of a tube having one end formed into two V-shaped members having cuttingedges, substantially as described.
2. A detachable spout and can-opener com prising a tapering tube having one end formed into two opposite V-shaped members having cutting-edges, and having the opposite end provided with a removable cover, substam tially as described.
3. A detachable spout and can-opener comprising a tube having one end formed into two opposite V-shaped members having cutting-edges, said tube having an annular rib ing rib formed thereon, and a roughened surnear the base of said members, substantially face between the said rib and the pointed as described. members, substantially as described.
