REEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 16, 1907'.
Application filed August 28, 1906. Serial No. 332,399.
To aZZ whmn "it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT M. MAGUIRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to reels to be used by boys in winding the thread for kite-flying; and the object of the invention is to provide a reel that will be cheap to make, compact, simple in parts, and embodying all features necessary for the purposes intended at a cost that will make it comparatively easy for any boy to procure.
The object consists, further, in providing a reel for kite-flying with blades which are provided with knots to form passage-ways for the fingers of the hand employed in holding the reel when in operation. This arrangement permits the parts to be closely nested.
The object consists, further, in the production of a device of the character described which will readily appeal to the young, thus making it a valuable medium for manufac turers and merchants to extend theirbusiness by pasting or printing their. advertisements thereon, to be distributed free or given as a premium when making sales of their goods.
The objects of the invention are accomplished by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a reel embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a crosssection of the reel. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail of a portion of the reel-frame, showing the recess for holding the movable portion in a fixed position when desired.
In the drawings, 1 is the frame of the reel, which is rectangular in shape and is preferably composed of wood, so as to make it as inexpensive as possible. The frame 1 is provided with oppositely-located. apertures 2, which provide the means for mounting a shaft 3, to which the reel-blades 4: are secured. The shaft 3 has its ends turned down to form the spindles 5, which engage the apertures 2 to the frame 1, and by means of a crank 6 the shaft and blades are rotated.
The blades 4 are provided with the notches 7 to receive the thread 8, and the latter after leaving the reel-blades passes out through a guide-slot 9 in the end of the frame 1. The blades 4 are also provided with the side notches 10, which form passage-ways for the fingers of the operators hand. This construction permits the frame 1 to be brought near the reel-blades, so that the parts may be as com vpact as possible without any interference.
When sufficient thread has been reeled in or out, the blades may be locked and held in a rigid position by moving the shaft 3 longitudinally toward the crank 6 until the square end of said shaft will engage the recess 15, located in the frame 1, and which conforms to the external dimensions of said shaft. This operation of the reel may be effected by the use of one hand, and at no time is the other hand brought into use except when winding in the thread. .The reel is also applicable to left-handed. persons by merely turning it over in a lateral direction.
Having thus fully described my'said invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a reel of the character described comprising the frame, a reel-shaft with blades movably mounted in said frame, saidv blade being provided with notches to form passageways for the fingers.
2. In a reel of the character described comprising the frame, a reel-shaft with blades movably mounted in said frame, said frame being provided with a notch to receive the end of the reel-shaft, for locking the latter against rotation.
3. In a reel of the character described comprising the frame, a reel-shaft with blades movably mounted in said frame, said blades being provided with notches to form passage-ways for the fingers, said frame being provided with a recess to receive the reelshaft and adapted to lock the reel against rotation.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 23d. day of August, A. D. 1906.
ALBERT M. MAGUIRE.
