N UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW rorrEN, or AUBURN, New YORK.
IMPRovEmi-:Nr'm coMBiNED swlFTs AND REELs.
`Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1464558, dated January 20, 1874; application tiled December 16, 1873.
L To all 'whom it may concern:
ful Improvements in a Combined Reel and Swifts; and the following is a full,`clear, and
exact description of the same, reference being l had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, in whichf1 f Figure 1 represents a vertical side view of j .the apparatus secured to the edge ofthe table, showing it in position for reeling yarns into skeins. Fig. 2 shows a viewA of the same, with the reel-shaft elevated to a vertical position,
so as to form a swift for winding yarn into balls, Src. of the hub or device for holding and securing the adjustable arms or skein-holders. shows an' enlarged side sectional view of the spring key and ratchet for holding the adjust able sliding arms in position.
Fig. 3 shows a front or face view Fig. 4
Fig. 5 shows a y broken-oft' sectional view of the standard and y the recessed joint, for changing the position of y the reel from vertical to horizontal, and securf l n g the same firmly in either position.
My invention relates to combined reels and swlfts; and it consists in the square recess in the standard, and the corresponding square Iprojection on the bolt, and piece that holds the revolving reelshaft, so that when it is changed from a vertical to a horizontal it is held equally iirm in both positions.
To enable others to make and use `my improvement, I will describe it more in detail, referring to the drawings and the letters marked thereon.
The standard A may be made of hard wood `or of metal, of any desired size and shape, ornamented or otherwise, it having a jaw, a, and a clamp or thumb screw, b, to hold it on the edge of the table B. In one side of the top of the standard A I make a square recess, c, as seen in Fig. 5, into which is Jfitted the square portion of the bolt or piece C, that forms the journal-boxfor the reel-shaft D. The round portion of the piece or bolt G extends through the standard A, and is provided with a screw and thumb-nut, d, by which the piece C maybe easily changed to place the device in either a horizontal or a vertical position, and hold it firmly to be used either as a reel or as a swift..`
For holding and adjusting the reel-arms H, as shown in Fig. 4, the hub F is made in two pieces and recessed on the innerk faces, so that the arms fit together at right angles, and when ,placed upon the shaft D are held firmly by a thumb-nut, f. Each piece of the hub F has two projecting or extending portions, g g, on
opposite sides, into which the arms H are iitted to slide in square holes, so that they will not turn. The arms H are provided with a series of hooked notches, h., into which the pin t' on the spring-key I catches, to hold the arms H from being forced inward, while they are always free to be drawn out or expanded. The springkcys I I are attached to the` extended portions g of the hub F by the studs Gr, and are operated to allow the armsH to be forced in by pressing down on the spring end of the key.
I do not claim, broadly, combining areel and swift, for I am well aware that has been done long ago, and is common property, as also are a number of the devices by which that purpose has been effected; but none of them that have ever come to my knowledge have been, in 'my opinion, sufficiently substantial, durable, and
effective.
What I claim at my invention is In combination with the reel and swift shaft D, the standard A, provided with the square recess c near its top, and the square-ended piece or bolt G and thumb-nut d, the bolt forming the journal-box for the reel-shaft D, so that the shaft is firmly supported to operate in either a vertical or a horizontal position, substantially asherein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
