ALBERT R. HURLBURT, OF MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT.
DECK-PLATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 9, 1907.
Application filed June 14, 1906. Serial No. 321.665.
To all 11/72/0711, it 71141 ;coll/M771]:
Be it known that I, ALBERT It. HURLBURT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Deck- Plates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accom'p anying drawings.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in deck-plates, and has for its object, among other things, to construct a deck-plate having a non-threadable cover and means for securely and conveniently at taching and detaching said cover.
To these and other ends my invention consists in the deck-plate having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed ontin the claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved deck-plate complete. Fig. 2 is -a sectional elevation thereof upon line A B of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an elevation of the cover member.
In the practice of my invention I provide a flanged body member 1, having suitable screw-holes 2 therethrough, a cover member 3, with an overhanging flange 4, which rests upon the lip 5 on said body member, and an integral downwardly-projecting hook 6.
Pivotally connected by the pin 9 with the ears 7 on said cover member is a latch member 8. This latch member is preferably constructed in a single piece, terminating at one end in a hook 11 and. at the other end in a circular thumb-ring 10, which lies normally within a recess in the top of the cover memher 3, so that the top surfaces of said cover and ring members are flush with each other.
A notch 12 is made in the cover member for convenience in lifting the ring 10 out of The cover member is detached by lifting the thumb-ring out of its recess, which thereby disengages the hook 1.1 from the body member, and by drawing the cover out of said body member. The cover is attached by reversing these operations, and when so attached and closed the top surfaces of all of the parts are flush with each other, as shownin Fig. 2, so that no parts project above the deck.
There are minor changes and alterations that can be made within my invention, and I would therefore have is understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but claim all that falls fairly within the spirit and scope of my invention.
I'Iaving described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a deck-plate, the combination with a body member; of a covcrmember; and alatch member pivotally connected with said cover member so as to provide means for separably securing said body and cover members together when in one position and'providing lifting means for said cover when in its other position, the lifting means being above the surface of said cover member when the said latch member is disengaged from said body member.
2. In a deck-plate, the combination with a body member; of a cover member havingareccss in its upper surface and an aperture therethrough adj accnt to said recess; and a swinging member pivotally connected with said cover member one end thereof lying within said recess ,with its upper surface flush with the top of said cover. I
ln a deck-plate, the combination with a body member; of a cover member having a hook thereon; and a latch member pivotally secured thereto with the upper end of said latch member forming a thumb-piece to lift said cover when said latch member is disengaged from said body member.
at. In a (leclcplate, the combination with a body member; of a cover member; a latch member, terminating at one end in a hook upon one side of said cover member and at the other end in a lifting means upon the opposite side of said cover member, pivotallyconnected with said cover member so that the hook end of said latch member will be held in engagement with the cover member by the weight of the lifting end of said latch. member.
In a deck-plate, the combination with a body member; of a cover me mber; and alatch member exposed upon both sides of said cover member and pivotally connected therewith, said iateh member having a hook end I heavier portion at one side of the pivot than upon one side of said cover member that is at the oth.er,that heavier portion of said iateh held in engagement with said body member member being exposed above the top of said by the weight of the end of said latch member cover member. I l 5 that is upon the opposite side of said cover In testimony whereof I aflix my signature member. d k 1 t h b :th F'lIl presence of two witnesses.
6. In a ee -p a e, t e com ination Wl T 1 the body member; of a cover member; and a ALBERT HURLBLRH' pivoted, gravity-actuated latch member for Witnesses: IO separably securing said cover member to said GEORGE B. HURLBURT,
body member, said latch member having a GEORGE B. HoUsToN.
