SEPARABLE HAT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Iatentea April 9, 1907.
Application filed 1m 9 Smfll 321,419.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, RUDoLrn F. BARTEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separa ble Hats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hats with separable parts. Its organization comprises a skeleton frame, from which extends a brim of somewhat stiff material and a crown supported on the frame harmonizing with the brim. Ashoulder is generally formed in the proper positions both the brim and the crown of the hat.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of one form of the away. Fig. 2 is a top view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a perspective view of the skeleton frame with the brim and its ap urtenances. Fig. 4 represents a plan view of t 1e crown before being placed in positionon the frame. Fig. 5 shows the form of the crown when placed in position on the skeleton frame. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the skeleton frame. Fig. 7 represents a plan view of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 shows a perspective view of a modified skeleton frame. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of a further modification of the skeleton frame. Fig. 10 represents a perspective view of a ruffle which may sometimes be employed. Fig. 11 represents a perspective view of the hat similar to Fig. 1 and a ruffle brim-cover supported on the brim. Fig. 12
The hat consists, essentially, of three parts, first, a substantially cylindrical or tubular skeleton frame 20, open at top and bottom, with the upper ring 21 and the lower ring 22, which latter is of somewhat smaller diameter, joined by the vertical connecting shoulders 24 adjacent to the lower ring; sec end, an annular brim 25, which is referably made of somewhat stiff materia has attached to and extending from its central opening 26 a tubular lining 27, and the latter has formed at its free edge a hem 28 for a draw-string 29; third, a crown 30, which is generally made of pliable material circular in form, with a hem 31 on its circumferential edge for a draw-string 32.
A ruflie, as shown in Fig. 10 ,may be made tubular in form, of pliable material and ornamented as desired. It has a hem 34 around its upper edge for a draw-string 35.
The modified form of skeleton frame in Fig. 8 has the upper and lower parallel rings 40 equal in diameter, and they are connected by the vertical members 41. The frame shown in Fig. 9 consists of the conical shell 42, with the openings 43 and shoulder 44 formed at its lower edge.
In Fig. 12, 50 shows a brim-cover with the central opening 5] the hem 52, and the drawstring To use the invention, the tubular lining 27 is pulled upward through the central opening of the skeleton frame 20, and then its upper free edge is pulled over the outside of the frame until the hem 28 is located under the shoulders 24, after which the draw-string 29 is pulled taut and the ends thereof tied in a bow. Then the crown is placed over the said lining on the frame and the hem brought under the same shoulders 24. The drawstring 82 is pulled taut and a bow 49 formed with its ends, when the hat will be ready for use. Should it be desired, the brim-cover 50 or, as shown in Fig. 11, the rufl'le 33, is placed on the brim 25 and the hem 34 brought under the shoulders 24. The string is then made taut and tied with a bow at its ends. The steps to dismantle the hat are evident from the description already given.
If the brim-cover is to be used, it may be placed on the brim 25, the hem 52 brought under the shoulders 24, and the draw-string 53 pulled taut with the ends thereof tied with a bow.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. The combination in a separable hat of a cylindrical frame having shoulders in its side, a separable brim, a tubular extension of the brim carried by the frame and secured under the shoulders thereof, and a separate crown over the extension and secured under the shoulders of the frame.
2. The combination in a separable hat of a frame open at top and bottom and having shoulders in its sides, a brim, a tubular ex tension attached at one edge to the brim, the said extension inclosing the skeleton frame, a draw-string connected with the free edge of the tubular extension and engaging with the shoulders of the skeleton frame, and a crown over the tubular extension and connected with the shoulders in said frame.
3. The combination in a separable hat of a skeleton frame consisting of vertical members and other members connecting them and having shoulders in the vertical members thereof, a separable annular brim of somewhat stiff material under the frame, a pliable extension extending from the central opening in the brim, passing through and Wrapped about the frame and secured in the shoulders thereof, and a crown of pliable material over the said extension and engaging with the shoulders of the frame.
4. The combination in a separable hat of a skeleton frame, an upper ring in the frame, a second ring smaller in diameter below the upper ring, vertical members with a shoulder in each joining the rings, a separate brim below the smaller ring, a tubular extension connected with the brim extending up through the rings and drawn over the outside cylindrical surface of the said frame, a hem at the edge of the said extension bearing up against the shoulders in the vertical members and means to hold the hem in place under said shoulders.
5. The combination in a separable hat of a skeleton frame, an upper ring in the frame, a second ring smaller in diameter below the upper ring, vertical members with a shoulder in each joining the rings, a separate brim below the smaller ring, a tubular extension connected with the brim, extending up through the rings and drawn over the outside cylindrical surface of the said frame, a hem at the edge of the said extension bearing up against the shoulders in the vertical members, means to hold the hem in place under said shoulders, a ruffle on the brim and having a central opening, a hem at the said central opening located under the shoulders of the vertical members of the frame, and a draw-string in the hem of the ruffle to hold the latter in place.
6. The combination in a separable hat of a frame having shoulders in its side, a separate brim, a tubular extension for the brim, the said extension inclosing the frame, means to engage the free edge of the said extension with the shoulders of the frame, a crown on the frame over the tubular extension, the lower edge of the crown in engagement with the shoulders of the frame, an upper brim on the brim with the extension, means to secure the upper brim with the shoulders of the frame.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 7th day of June, A. D. 1906.
