Beit known that I, BERT O. SUITS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Rail Joints, of Which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in means for fastening the side rails of a metal bed to the corner-posts of the bed and the object of the invention is, iirst, to provide a device which will make a stiitl and unyielding joint, thereby preventing the shaky unsteady condition existing with many iron beds as now constructed and holding the head and foot of the bed in correct vertical position at right angles to the side rails; second, to provide a rail-joint which will permit of the ready reversing of the side rail to meet the conditions most desirable where a box-mattress is used and the different conditions when slats are used; third, to provide a simple, inexpensive, and durable rail-joint construction.

I accomplish the objects of the invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which` Figure 1 is a detail in horizontal section of a bed-post, showing the att ached side rail and joint in tcp plan view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 '3 of Fig. 2 5 and Fig. e is a detail in top plan view and horizontal section of the same post shown in Fig. 1,

but showing the rail-joint and rail in a reverse or inverted position from that shown in 1.

Like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.

6 is a tubular iron bed-post of usual construction, and 7 is an iron band surrounding said post and cast thereon in a fixed and permanent manner. The transverse bar 8 has its ends embedded in the band 7, so as to connect the posts. Extending upwardly from the band 7 is the integral truncated conical extension 9, Which is concentric with the post and has the vertical locking-rib 10.

11 is the side rail of the bed, formed out of angle-iron, as clearly shown in cross-section in Fig. 3, and cast upon the ends ot the rail are the heads 12. Each of these heads has a vertical opening', the walls of which taper inwardly to the center of the head to it the conical sides otl the extensions 9, and extending into this opening from the end of the head is a slot 13 large enough to permit of the passage ot the post 6 therethrough in placing the head 12 of the rail 11 in position upon the extension 9. In putting the parts together the rail is raised high enough to clear the extension 9, the head is pushed upon the post into the position shown in the drawings, and then the rail and head are lowered until the conical Walls of the head are resting upon the truncated cone 9. This .will prevent the horizontal displacement of the rail.

14 is a sleeve Which makes a loose sliding 'lit on the post 6. The Walls of the sleeve have a downward taper to fit the corresponding taper of the upper part of the opening through head 12, and vWhen the head 12 is in position of use on the extension 9 it is locked against vertical displacement by means of the tapering sleeve 14, which is slid down the post 6 into the position shown in Fig. 2. When it is desired to disconnect thebed-rail for the purpose of taking the bed apart or for reversing the bed-rail, the sleeve 14 is first lifted out of its seat in the head 12. Then the head will be easily raised above the extension 9, and thereupon it is readily Withdrawn troni the post. The rail 12 is reversed by turning it end for end.

The vertical opening through the head 12 is provided with the groove 16 to receive the rib 10 and hold the rail in proper position at right angles to the head or foot of the bed.

In order to avoid scratching the finished enameled surface of the post 6 by the raising and lowering ot the sleeve 14, I prefer to form annular grooves in the sleeve 14 and seat within said grooves rubber bands 17, the sott material of which prevents abrasion.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. The combination with a bed-post having a concentric truncated conical section, of a bed-rail having a head with a vertical opening to receive the conical section of the post said head having a slot for the passage of the post into said opening, and an externally-tapering sleeve slidingly mounted on the post to enter the opening in the head and act as a Wedge to lock the head against vertical movement.

2. The combination with a bed-post having a concentric truncated conical section, said section having a vertically-disposed rib,

of a bed-rail having a head With a vertical opening to receive the conical section of the post said head having a slot for the lateral assembling of the head on the post, and said vertical opening having a groove to receive the rib on the conical post-section7 and an externally-tapering sleeve slidingly mounted on the post to enter the opening in the head and act as a Wedge to lock the head against vertical movement.

3. ln a bed-rail joint, a post having a concentric truncated conical section in combination With a bed-rail having a head at each end, said head having a vertical opening with an end slot leading thereto of a Width to adinit the post, said opening being expanded in diameter both Ways fro'ni the iniddle of the opening, and a tapering sleeve sliding on the post and adapted to enter the opening in the iead and loc i the head on the post.

4.
