Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, 31919.
Application filed June 22, 1918. Serial No. 241,313.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY GARNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Media, in the county of Delaware, Stat of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and use-- ful Bedclothes-Retainer, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a device intended for retaining bed 'clothes on a bed or bed stead, more particularly of the order of a crib whereby they are prevented from displacement, and the child occupying thecrib remains covered. To this end I employ channeled heads or blocks adapted to be fitted on the side rails of the crib, oifset arms on said heads or blocks forming spaces adapted to receive adjacent portions of the bed clothes, and wedging devices adapted to enter said spaces and clamp said portions of the bed clothes to the side rails.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the im-- portant instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as they are within the spirit or scope of the claims.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a crib having bed clothes retainers embodying my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 represents a plan view of a retainer on an enlarged scale including portion of a side rail partly in section to which the re tainer is applied.
Fig. 3 represents an end elevation of the device.
Fig.4 represents a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 5 represents a vertical section on line 5-5 Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 represents an end elevation omitting the wedge or key employed.
Fig. 7 represents a top or plan view of the device. L
Fig. 8 represents a side elevation thereof.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings.
1 designates a head or block of metal or othermaterial having therein the vertically extending channel 2 which is adapted to receive the side rail 3 of a crib or of any other bed if the device is applied thereto).
The inner wall 4 of said channel has fitted to it the screw or bolt 5 whose point is adapted to engage the adjacent portion of said side rail 3, while the latter rests against the outer wall 6 of said channel, consequently when the screw 5 is tightened the head is firmly clamped to the side rail 3 and so retains its position.
Connected with the outer portion of an end of the head 1, and extending longitudinally therefrom is the arm 7 which when the block is in position on the side rail is 011- set from the latter so as to leave the recess 8 between said arm and side rail to receive portions of bed clothes adjacent thereto.
9 designates a wedge or tapering key which is adapted to be inserted in the recess 8 and to tighten therein in contact with the inner face'10 of the arm 7 and the portion of the bed clothes occupying said space, thus clamping said portions and retaining said clothes on the crib and so keeping the child or occupant thereof covered with said clothes.
The face 10 of the arm 7 is inclined in the direction from top to bottom so that the portion of the key contacting therewith will ride freely thereon and take firm hold of the same.
A portion of the inner face of the wall 6 is cut away forming the lugs 11 with which the side rail engages so that the clamp will be held more firmly thereon.
It will be seen that a head is applied to each side rail of the crib at the head and foot thereof and retained thereon by the respective screws 5.
After a child is placed in the crib under the sheets, the corner portions of the latter are tucked into the recesses 8. Then the wedges are inserted in said spaces and driven thereinto to the required extent whereby said portions are pressed against the side rails and so held tightly whereby the sheets are prevented from being kicked off of the crib by the child or slipping from their positions on the crib.
When the keys are loosened and removed the sheets are disconnected from the clamps and so may be removed from the crib for purposes requiring the same, and the clamps may also be displaced by properly rotating the screws 5.
In order to prevent disconnection of the key when in inoperative position, I employ the chain 12 or a cord or other flexible means, the lower end of which is connected with an eye 13 on a proper portion of said key, and the upper end of which is mounted freely on the shank of the screw 5, it being evident that the latter may be rotated Without the interference of said chain.
The eye 18 is connected with a rod 14 formed preferably of a piece of wire which is passed through the key and secured thereto by the clench 15 on the end of the piece, thus preventing turning of the eye and splitting of the key.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. In a bed clothes retainer of the charac ter stated, a head provided with a channel adapted to have a rail of a bedstead received therein, means on said head for clamping it on said rail, an arm extending from an end of said head oifset therefrom adapted to form a recess between said arm and said rail for the reception of relative portions of the bed clothes and a wedging device adapted to enter said recess and engage said arm and said portions of the bed clothes.
2. A bed clothes retainer of the character stated consisting of a head having therein a channel adapted to receive a rail of a bedstead, means on said head for clamping it on said rail, and an offset arm extending longitudinally from an end of said head adapted to form between the inner wall of said arm and the adjacent portion of said rail, a recess into which relative-portions of the bed clothes may be tucked, and a wedge-like device adapted to enter said recess and tighten said bed clothes therein.
3. In a bed clothes retainer of the character stated, a head adapted to be clamped on a rail of a bedstead, and having an offset and forming a recess adapted to receive a relative portion of the bed clothes, a key adapted to wedge said portion to a proper part of said head, an eye on said key, and a flexible device for connecting said key with a member of said head, said key having entering the same a piece to which said eye is attached, said piece having thereon means for clenching it on said key.
