TOY LANTERN.

Be it known that I, J EssIE CARR TYNDALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Toy Lanterns, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of a lantern constructed in ac cordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through the center of the lantern shown in Fig. l looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my lantern with the lid removed.

This invention relates to toys, and particularly to toy lanterns-such, for example, as are used on Halloween night.

The object of my invention is to provide a lantern representing a bogie-head and provided with a removable top that is detachably connected to a rod or handle by which the lantern can be carried. The lantern consists of an approximately spherical-shaped shell made of papier-mache or some other suitable material and preferably constructed to represent a pumpkin in which openings are formed to represent eyes, nose, and mouth.

Referring to the drawings, which represent the preferred form of my invention, l designates an approximately sphericalshaped shell which is preferably formed of some material that can be molded into shape, and on the inside of the bottom of the shell is a socket 2 for holding a candle 3. Openings are formed in the shell to designate eyes 6, nose 7, and mouth 8, and pieces of colored or printed paper are pasted over these openings on the inside of the shell to prevent the air from extinguishing the flame of the candle. The shell is provided with a removable top or lid 9, that is held in place by clips l0, which extend underneath the inwardly-projecting flange l1 at the upper end of the shell. Said flange is provided with openings l2, through which the clips 10 on the lid are inserted when thev lid is placed in position,

and the lid is thereafter turned slightly, so that the clips will pass out of alinement with the openings 12 and extend underneath the flange to firmly secure the lid in place.

As shown in Fig. 2, the underneath surface of the iiange l1 adjacent the openings 12 is inclined or beveled at 13, so that when the lid is' turned the clips 10 will ride up said inclined surfaces, and thus cause the lid to be drawn down tight on the flange l1.

Preferably the lid 9 is formed of sheet metal and is provided with holes 14, through which the heat and smoke from the candle can escape; but, if desired, the lid could be formed of the same material as the shell and the clips be embedded therein. eye 15 is secured to the lid, and a rod or handle 16 is provided for carrying the lantern, the rod having a hook 17, which engages the eye on the lid 9, so that the rod will be detachably connected to the lantern.

The outer surface of the shell is preferably ribbed and colored to represent a pumpkin, and the pieces of paper which cover the eyeopenings are printed or colored to represent eyes, the paper that covers the mouth-opening also being printed to represent teeth and the outer surface of the shell being provided with lines 1S, extending over the eye-openings to represent eyebrows.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A toy lantern consisting of an approximately spherical-shaped molded shell open at its upper end and provided with openings for representing a nose, mouth and eyes, said shell being formed to represent a pumpkin, a removable lid to cover the open endof the shell, devices on the lid which extend underneath an inwardly-projecting flange on the shell, an eye connected to said lid, and a handle detachably connected to said eye; substantially as described.
