MIXED WHALEBONE FOR BODICES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 26, 1907.
Application filed August 23,1905. Serial No. 275,407-
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that ,I, EMILE Mitnnnrc Bos- SUET, of 49 Boulevard Haussmann, in the city of Paris, Republic of France, engineer, have invented a Mixed halebone for Bodices, W'aists, Dresses, and other Similar Articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is an improvement in substitutes for whalebone, and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings forming a part hereof, Figure l is a longitudinal section of a stay formed in accordance With my improvement. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line A A of Fig. 2.
In the practical ap lication of my invention I arrange a plura ity of strips a of natural or artificial Whalebone on each side of a filling-strip b of suitable soft flexible materialsuch as cork, leather, linen, &c.-the several parts being connected by means of a suitable glue or cement.
By reason of the interposed filling sub stance b the two strips of Whalebone or other material a may move freely upon each other, While yet retained in proper relation with respect to each other. WVhen a stay composed as above set forth is bent upon itself, one of the Whalebone strips is com ressed and the other is stretched, the soft filling partaking in part of both movements and permitting a greater degree of flexibility than would be possible Were the stay a solid piece of Whalebone or Were the Whalebone strips connected directly With each other.
My improved stay is extremely flexible and can be folded upon itself many times Without breaking and the combination is much more resistant than the genuine Whalebone, While at the same time possessing all its flexibility.
It will be understood that the mixed or substitute Whalebone can be varied, according to the circumstances, by associating a greater or smaller number of strips of Whalebone a, a filling-strip I),- however, being inserted between each pair of strips a. The central filling-strip I) might also be constituted of a steel strip coated with a soft substancesuch as cork, linen, paper, &c., and the outer strips of any suitable flexible hard materialsuch as natural or artificial Whalebone, cachalot, horn, &c.
I claim A stiffener composed of tWo strips of resilient flexible material acting as a spring and a thin sheet of cork of a Width and length equal to said strips, and interposed therebetween and to Which the same are glued.
The foregoing specification of my mixed Whalebone for bodices, waists, dresses, and.
other similar articles signed by me this 3d day of August, 1905.
EMILE MEDERIO BOSSUET.
