SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 652,102, dated June 19, 1900. Application filed January 18, 1900. Serial No. 11896. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it knownthat I, GUSTAV GOLDMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of No. 2000 McOulloh street, city of Baltimore, State of Maryland,- have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoulder and Sleeve Pads, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a shoulder=pad for use in coats and dresses, and has for its object to provide a pad, made of felt, which will stiffen .and fill the shoulder on top, at the back, and in front, and also stifien and fill the top of the sleeve, below the seam by which it is sewed into the body part of the garment.

In the drawings similar numerals indicate the same parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a plan view of my shoulder-pad when laid flat. Fig. 2 is a plan view of same pad with one edge rolled. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of Fig. 2 in the position which it 00- cupies upon the shoulder of a garment; and Fig. 4 is a vertical elevation of part of a garment, showing the position which the pad will occupy when secured in the shoulder.

Referring to Fig. 1, the pad is constructed of a piece of felt, of uniform thickness th roughout, formed in approximately-elliptical shape, with a point at one end and skived oif all around to a very thin edge. This leaves a portion of the pad of uniform and of the original thickness of the material in the center approximately elliptical in shape. 1 represents the central high portion, 2 the thinned The thick portion 1 is slitted with a series of parallel slits 4 4, designed to permit the pad to bend over the shoulder freely.

Referring to Fig. 2, 5 is the edge of the pad above the bend, rolled inward as far as the thick part, and 6 6 is a series of slits on the opposite side of the pad, which appear on the top of the roll and facilitate the bending of the roll in the same direction as the bending of the pad. After the edge of the pad has been rolled to form the roll 5 it may be secured in any suitable manner by stitching or gumming or molding or otherwise.

In Fig. 4 the position of the pad will be seen as it is attached to a garment. If the rolled top sleeve is intended to be used, the form of pad shown in Figs. 2 and 3 will be in serted in the garment and the rolled edge of the pad will fill the rolled top of the sleeve, and the point 3 will'project down under the sleeve-seam approximately as far as the back shoulder-seam. If the pad is to be used with a sleeve which has not a rolled top, but a flat top, the edge instead of being rolled upward maybe left projecting downward, or it may be saturated with some stifiening substance and molded into the desired form of the shoulder.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A shoulder-pad approximately elliptical in shape, having an approximately-elliptical high portion of uniform-thickness in the center, and of gradually-lessening thickness all around the edge, and having one side of the pad rolled upon itself to form a sleeve-filler.

2. A shoulder-pad approximately elliptical in shape, having a high central portion, and a thin edge, and having one of its sides rolled upon itself toward the high portion and secured to form a sleeve-filling, substantially as described.

3. A shoulder-pad approximately elliptical in shape, having a high portion in the center, and a-thin edge, the high portion being slitted at right angles to the longer axis of the ellipse on the top side, the pad having one of its edges rolled inward toward the high portion, and the rolled part being slitted in lines parallel to the slits in the high portion on the opposite side of the pad.

4. A shoulder-pad substantially elliptical in shape, having a central high portion of substantially the same shape, the edge lessening in thickness all around.

5. A shoulder-pad substantially elliptical in shape, havinga central high portion of substantially the same shape, the edge lessening in thickness all around, and having one edge formed to fit over the arm.
