Description

No. 847,529. PATENTED MARQIQ, 1907; I
e. T. TRUMBULL. VERTIGALLY ADJUSTABLE STOOL.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 14, 1905. RENEWED FEB. 1, 1907.
THE NORRIS Pznns cu., WASHINGTON, D, c.
GEORGE T. TRUMBULL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
VERTlCALLY-ADJUSTABLE STOOL- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 19', 1907.
Application filed July 14, 1905. Renewed February 1I 1907. Serial No. 355,285.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE T; TRUMBULL, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vertically-Adjustable Stools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to piano and like stools in which the seat is made'vertically adjustable; and the object of the present improvement is to provide a simple and eflicient inclosure of the vertical screw by which a vertical adjustment of the seat is attained and by means of which the dress of the occupant is protected from contact with the screw and the lubricant used thereon, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
The accompanying drawing is a side elevation, partly in section, of a piano-stool embodying the present invention.
Referring to the drawing, 1 is the stoolbase of any usual construction and provided with the usual screw-bushing 2, in which the vertical screw 3 turns, the said screw having the usual attaching-head 4, by which it is secured to the under side of the stool-seat 5,
as shown in the drawing and as usual in the present class of stools.
The present improvement involves means for inclosing the adjusting-screw 3, so that the dress of the occupant cannot contact with and become soiled by the oil and dirt upon the threads of said screw, and to such end comprises a structural arrangement of parts as follows: i
6 are a series of tubular sections located intermediate of the top of the stool-base 1, and the under side of the stool-seat 5 and surrounding the screw 3, so as to inclose the same. Such tubular sections are adapted to move one within the other in actual use, and their vertical disengagement is prevented by oppositely-projecting flanges 7 and 8 on the adj acent ends of the respective sections.
9 is a cup-shaped collar connected to the upper end of the uppermost of the tubular sections aforesaid and provided with a circular rim by which it is attached to the under surface of the stool-seat 5 by wood-screws or other usual fastening means.
10 is an outwardly-extending circular flange or rim on the lowermost of the tubular sections aforesaid and by means of which attachment is made to the upper surface of the stool-base 1 by wood-screws or other like fastening means.
11 is a stop-sleeve arranged around the screw 3 and within the tubular sections 6, with its lower end resting upon or secured to the upper face of the stool-base 1. Said stopsleeve is of a height somewhat greater than the height of any one of the tubular sections 6, and its purpose is to contact With the head 4 of the screw to limit the downward movement of the stool-seat and prevent the occurrence of a crushing strain upon the series of tubular sections with the said seat in its lowermost position.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination in a vertically-adjustable stool, of a base, a seat, an intermediate vertical screw connecting the base and seat, a series of tubular telescoping sections surrounding the screw and connected respectively to the under surface of the seat and upper surface of the base, and a stop-sleeve interposed between the seat and base to limit the downward movement of the seat, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination in a vertically-adjustable stool, of a base, a seat, an intermediate vertical screw connecting the base and seat, a series of tubulartelescoping sections surrounding the screw and connected respectively t0 the under surface of the seat and upper surface of the base, and a stop-sleeve interposed between the seat and base to limit the downward movement of the seat, the said telescoping sections having oppositelyprojecting flanges on their respective ends to preigent disengagement, substantially as set 'ort 3. The combination in a vertically-ad'ustable stool, of a base, a seat, an interme iate vertical screw connecting the base and seat, a series of tubular telescoping sections surrounding the screw, and a cup-shaped collar secured to the uppermost section and to the under side of the seat, the lowermost section having a flange or rim secured to the u per side of the base, substantially as set fort 4. The combination in a vertically-adjustable stool, of a base, a seat, an intermediate vertical screw connecting the base and seat, a Ward movement of the seat, substantially as series of tubular telescoping sections surset forth.
