Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY FRITTs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tinton, in the county of Lawrence and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and useful Bed, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates particularly to that class of metallic bedsteads having open head and foot boards, though perhaps adaptable for use in connection with other types. With such bedsteads considerable difficulty is experienced in maintaining the clothing in proper position, and it is the object of this invention to provide a structure in which this objection is entirely overcome. At the same time said structure will not only not interfere with the usual ornamentation, but can be made up in different attractive and pleasing designs.

The preferred form of construction is illustrated in the accom anying drawings and is described in the following specification.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of one of the end boards of a bed. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a portion 0 the panel employed. Fig. 4 is a similar view of a slightly-mo dified form of construction.

n the embodiment illustrated the end board consists of the usual posts 10, connected by upper and lower open frames 11. These frames may be of any desired design, a very simple form being illustrated in the present case. The only important feature to be noted about said frames are the crossbars 12, attached to the posts 10 and spaced some distance apart. These bars are tubular, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and are provided in their adjacent walls with longitudinally-disposed slots 18. A closed panel 14 is located between the posts and the upper and lower frames and has its margins fitted in the slots 13. Theledges of said panels arranged within the bar are provided with offset flanges, said flanges being preferably made up of sections 15 alternately turned in opposite directions, though a single continuous flange, as 15*, may be employed, such flange being illustrated in Fig. 4. The flanges are inserted through the ends of the bars before the same are attached to the posts.

The panel is located at substantially the height of the bedclothing, thus forming a continuous closure along the end of the bed, and therefore the clothing when tucked in between the mattress and the panel is not liable to become displaced. The panels may be made up of one or more sheets of any metal desired and provided with pressed ornamentation of anycharacter. It is securely held in place by the marginal flanges, which, engaging the upper and lower frames, prevent their s reading apart. As illustrated in Fig. 1, it orms an additional ornamentation to a bed and does not interfere with fanciful grillework of any nature both above tages of the herein-described invention will.

In a bed, the combination of corner-posts, of upper and loweropen frames spaced apart and provided at such intervening space with tubular bars having longitudinal slots, and a plate forming a closed panel arranged in the said space contiguous to the bedclothing to cooperate with the latter for holding the cover in place, said plate having its-upper and lower edges extending through the said slots and provided with projecting flanges located within the tubular bars, substantially as described.
