VORTEX MANUFACTURING OF NEW CORN AND BRUSH KNIFE.

Application filed January 24, 1906. Serial No. 297,581.
To (0H w/wm if vita y concern:
Be it known that we, DAVID B. DATE and AUGUST B. KUGELMANN, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Corn and Brush Knife, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a construction of corn and brush knife wherein labor will be much reduced and which will cut simultaneously and equally at both sides of the standing stalks and brush, producing a clean shear out having an upward inclination.
Another purpose of the invention is to so construct the body of the knife that when its outer end is brought in engagement with the ground the blade may be given the necessary upward inclination with out danger of canting to either side.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a view illustrating the application of the improved knife. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the body of the knife; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the body of the knife and its handle, the section being taken practically on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
The body A of the knife is transversely arched, being inclined downward in opposite directions from its longitudinal center, forming thereby two side sections 10 and 11, as is shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and the forward end 12 of the body is more or less pointed or V- shaped, as is illustrated in Fig. 2. The body A is made of steel of suitable thickness, and at the outer longitudinal edge of the righthand body-section 11 an integral flat flange 13 is formed, which flange extends from the inner or rear end of the body beyond its right-hand inclined front edge, terminating forwardly in transverse alinement with the point of the said forward end 12, forming a tongue 14, as best shown in Fig. 2.
A longitudinal V out A is made in the central portion of the body A, extending from the inner end of the body where the cut is widest and terminating back of the point at the forward edge 12, as is especially shown in Fig. 2, thus forming two cutting edges c, which necessarily incline from the front rearward in opposite directions. Each cutting edge a is provided with a beveled surface 0. on its under face, and in the further forma tion of the cutting edges 0. the heel portions of said cutting edges, or those portions at the rear of the body, are curved, as illustrated at a in Fig. 2. The aforesaid beveled surfaces at extend around the heel portions (L The flange 13 serves as a support for the handle 15, secured thereto by rivets 16 passed through the handle and through apertures 17 in the flange 13. The outer end portion 18 of the handle is therefore straight, as is likewise its inner end 19; but the intermediate portion 20 of the handle is inclined, as shown in Fig. 1, whereby to enable the knife to be given the necessary inclination in action and be operated with a draw motion without requiring the operator to unduly stoop. When the forward edge of the knife rests upon the ground, the tongue 14 is likewise brought in engagement with the ground and serves to balance the knife and prevent it from rocking upon the point of its body.
The arched formation of the body and the oppositely-inclined cutting edges a cause the knife to produce a clean shear cut with an upward inclination, rendering the work less burdensome than when the ordinary knife is employed, and the rounded heels a of the cutting edges a cause the material to be guided between the cutting edges, and if large bunches are to be cut the cutting action commences immediately upon the application of the knife.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A corn and brush knife comprising a body transversely and downwardly arched and provided at its longitudinal center with a V out extending from its rear edge, forming oppositely-inclined cutting edges, said cutting edges having their under surfaces beveled, a longitudinal flange at one side edge, and a handle secured to said flange.
2. A corn and brush knife, comprising a body transversely and downwardl r arched and provided at its longitudinal center with a V out extending from its rear edge, forming oppositely-inclined cutting edges, said. cutting edges having their under surfaces beveled, a straight longitudinal flange integral with one outer side edge of the body, and a handle secured to the said flange, having a straight outer section and an intermediate inclined section.
3. A corn and brush knife, comprising a body transversely and downwardly arched and provided with a V-shaped forward edge, the said body being likewise provided with a central longitudinal V cut'extending from its rear edge and being Widest at said rear edge of the body, the said body being also rounded at the outer end walls of said cut, thereby I forming oppositely-inclined cutting edges, the said cutting edges being beveled on their I under faces throughout their entire length, a straight flange integral with an outer side 1 edge of the body, which flange extends forward to substantially transverse alinernent with the forward point of the body, and a l handle secured to said flange, provided with a straight outer portion and an intermediate I inclined portion.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of 1 two subscribing witnesses.
