ADJUSTABLE KNIFE-GAGE.
Speccaton of Letters Patent.
PatentedA March 12, 1907.
Application filed November 21, 1906. Serial No. 344.472.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD COLEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Knife-Gages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to gage attachments for knives for cutting leather and similar material; and its objects are to provide a simple and convenient attachment that can readily be placed upon and removed from the knife-blade and which while in place may be adjusted for cutting strips or ribbons of desired widths; also, to adapt the gage for use as an attachment for ordinary pocket-knives that may be readily placed and removed at pleasure.
My improvements are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of an attachment embodying the invention and showing the same applied for use on a knife. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 and showing the parts on a larger scale.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the cutting-tool, preferably an ordinary pocketknife having a handle 2 and a folding blade 3, having a sharpened cutting edge 4.
rIhe gage devices comprise a member having a body -portion 5, provided with a pair of clamping-jaws 6, (preferably spring-jaws,) `joined at their forward ends and preferably normally divergent from front to rear. Near their rear ends the jaws are provided with a thumb-screw 7 for clamping them to the blade 3. At the forward end of the body 5 is a laterally-projecting arm 8, provided with an elongated longitudinal slot 9, in which is a slidable screw 10. This screw engages with and carries a substantially L-shaped gagehead ll, which is provided with depending side flanges 12, that bear on the adjacent edges of the arm 8.
In practice the gage-body is secured in place on the blade 3 by seating' the latter between the clamping-jaws with its edge 4 toward the front end of the body 5, and the jaws are then operated by the screw 7 to clamp and hold the parts in place. The gagehead ll may then be adjusted along the arm 8 in accordance with the width of the strips to be cut and secured at the point of adjustment bymeans of the screw 10. When so arranged, the head l 1 is brought to contact with the edge of the leather or other material to be cut, and the knife is drawn toward the operator to cut a strip or ribbon from the material, the blade movement being guided by the contact of the gage-head with the edge of the material.
It is obvious that the device can be readily removed from the blade by turning the screw 7 to open the jaws, and it is also obvious that the gage-head can be easily adjusted for cutting strips of different widths.
An especial advantage of this device is that it is adapted for use in connection With a knife-blade of any style, thus enabling it to be used as a removable attachment for an ordinary pocket-knife.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
l. A knife-gage, comprising a body p0rtion providing clamping-jaws adapted to engage a cutting-blade, an arm extending laterally therefrom at a right angle and provided with a longitudinal slot, a gage-head adjustable lengthwise of said arm, and a screw operating in said slot for holding the gage-head in place on the arm, substantially as set forth.
2. A knife-gage, comprising a body portion providing clamping-jaws adapted to engage a cutting-blade, an arm extending therefrom laterally and at a right angle to the side of the blade, a flanged L-shaped gage-head slidable on said arm, and a screw operating in said slot for holding the gagehead in place on the arm, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD COLEMAN.
