Description

of Chicago, county of UNITED STATES PATENT oFEIoE.
JOSEPH H. WIEDNER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGN OR TO GEORGE LANZ & COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
SATCHEL-LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 5, 1907.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OSEPH H. WIEDNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident Cook, and State of Illi nois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Satchel-Latches, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying 'draw ings, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates to that type of satchel-latches which are adapted to be used in connection with jointed hasps. This form of hasp, made in two sections, permits the jaws of the satchel to spread somewhat, and it is the practice to supplement it by a pin forced down through the overlapping jaws.
- The object of this invention is to provide an improved latch of this type which will be certain in its automatic action and of great strength.
The invention consists in the device hereinafter described, and which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a detail plan view of a satchel, showing the improved latch. Fig. 2 is a detail side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section through the latch and the satchel-jaws, taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is a detail section through the satchel-jaws, showing an end elevation of the latch. Fig. 5 is a view simi lar to Fig. 3 with the movable parts of the latch in a different position. Fig. 6 is a detail of the movable latch-plate, forming a part of the device.
The overlapping and underlapping jaws, respectively, of the satchel are represented at 10 11. The latch is housed in an oblong casing 12, secured to the overlapping jaw 10 by any suitable means, as shown by means of a pair of integral depending lugs 13 14, setting down through suitable apertures in the jaw and having their lower ends overturned or clenched. This casing is provided in its upper face with an aperture 15 for receiving the loop 16 of the hasp 17, which is attached to the jaw 11.
the casing 12 and is provided with a thumbpiece 19, which projects through an aperture in the end thereof, and a tongue 20, adapted to enter the loop 16. An expansion-spring 21 reacts between the inner end of the plate 18 and the end wall of the casing 12, the parts being so disposed that under the action of this spring the tongue 20 is projected across the aperture 15. The plate 18 is guided by a set of depending lugs or flanges 22 at its sides and having a bearing against the side walls of the casing 12, and also by a post 23, uniting the top of the casing 12, and a floor-plate 24,.iwhich rests upon the top of the satchel-jaw 1.0, the post 23 passing through a longitudinal slot 25 in the plate 18.
A latch 26 in hook form is pivoted to a lug 27, rising from the floor-plate 24, the head of the hook being directly below the aperture 15 and its nose projecting into an aperture 27 a in the satchel-jaw 10 and being adapted to enter an aperture 28 in the satchel-j aw 11 when the hook is depressed against the resistance of a spring 29, attached to the floorplate 24 and pressing upwardly against a stud 30 on the hook. As the loop 16 of the hasp enters the aperture 15 it forces the hook 26 down against the resistance of the spring 29, and thus bringing it into engage ment with both jaws of the satchel holds them against spreading.
The head of the hook 26 is provided with a shoulder 31, so disposed that when the plate 18 is pushed inwardly and the hook is in its upper position, as shown in Fig. 4, the end of the tongue 20 engages this shoulder, and is thus held in its retracted position, leaving the aperture 15 obstructed only by the hook 26, which yields to the pressure of the hasp. As the tongue 20 is released by the downward movement of the hook it is advanced by the spring 21 and enters the loop 16.
I claim as my invention- 1. A satchel-latch comprising, in combination, a casing having a hasp-receiving aperture, a spring-advanced reciprocating plate within the casing having a tongue normally 5 crossing the aperture of the casing, and a hook pivoted Within the casing having its A reciprocating plate 18 is housed within j head located below the casing-aperture and its free end projecting downwardly through 1 the bottom of the casing.
2. A satchel-latch comprising, in combinaend projecting downwardly through the bottion, a casing having a hasp-receiving apertom of the casing, and a spring for raising the ture, a spring-advanced reciprocating plate head of the hook into the path of the tongue. Within the casing having a tongue normally JOSEPH H. WIEDNER. crossing the aperture of the casing, a hook Witnesses:
pivoted within the casing having its head 10- LOUIS K. GILLSON, cated below the casing-aperture and its free E. M. KLATCHER.
