To all whont it ntay concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. STREHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissors- Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in implements for sharpening scissors, knives, razors, &c.; and its objects are, first, to provide a multiple-geared hand rotary grindingmachine with which I can give to the edges of scissors a uniform bevel at the exact desired angle, and, second, to so arrange said machine that knives may be successfully ground thereon, the grinding of both the scissors and the knives to be mani ulated with the left hand of the operator w 'le the machine isbeing operated by the right hand. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a back elevation of the machine. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan of the guide and clamping device. Fig. 4 is a plan of the knife-rest; and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the upper end of the clamping device, showing the relative positions of the knife-blade and the grinder or emery-wheel of the machine.

A represents the supporting-frame of the machine. B represents the shaft that carries the emery-wheel or grinder E and is supported to revolve freely in the bearings 12 b. This shaft is driven by means of the crank d, supported in the bearing a, through the medium of the multiple gear C C, to revolve many times faster than the crank is made to revolve, so as to give the greatest possible motion to the wheel E consistent with the convenient practical working of the machine.
The principal features of my invention lie in the construction and operation of the guide and clamping devices, which consist of a support F, secured in the bed or frame A by means of a set-screw acting upon the adjusting arm or slide F, which may be adjusted laterally of the frame by loosening the screw f, and thus enable the operator to place the clamping-jaws I I at the desired distance from the surface of the wheel E as the width of the blade being sharpened may require. The support F is annular in form,
with a slot cut away from the upper surface to allow the standard H to be slid lengthwise of the support, said standard having a guide G at right angles therewith and so formed that it will slide freely in the support to bring every portion of the len th of the scissorsblade M in contact with t e periphery of the wheel E when grinding scissors.
For holding the scissors to position to grind them successfully I form an integral jaw I near the upper end of and at right angles with the standard H and place an adjustable jaw I above it, so secured that it may be readily raised and lowered to adjust it to the thickness of the scissors-blade being ground, and after placing the blade upon the jaw I as desired I force the jaw I firmly against it by means of a set-screw J, that screws through the bearing 71. at the upper end of the standard H. I then place the support F in the proper position to bring the edge of the scissors-blade M in contact with the periphery of the grinding-wheel E at the exact desired angle when the wheel E may be driven rapidly by turning the crank D and all portions of the edge of the scissors ground by sliding the guide G longitudinally in the support F alternately to bring the entire length of the blade in contact with the periphery of the Wheel as many times as is necessary to sharpen it thoroughly and uniformly. When desiring to examine the edge of the blade, the standard H may be carried back from the wheel, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2.
When sharpening knives, I find it necessary to anchor the standard H in one position, which may be done by means of a set-screw, as g, or by. any other well-known device for so securing it, and to provide an auxiliary rest, for which purpose I find the rest shown in Figs. 4 and 5 best adapted. This rest is formed with a body L, having an indenture Z for the end of the screw J to enter to insure holding the rest firmly to place above the jaw I I, so that it will not be moved by the motion of the knife-blade K as it is being slid back and forth over the surface of the wheel E. This guide has an angular shoulder formed at Zfor the back of the knife-blade K to rest against, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 4, and has two longitudinal prongs Z Z so situated that the wheel E will be between them when the knife is being ground, and the knife-blade is laid thereon and slid back and forth lengthwise over the Wheel E until the desired degree of sharpness I 5 arm at right angles therewith and laterally is attained. The blade K (shown in Fig. 5) 1 is shown as bearing upon the wheel near the extreme end of the blade.
In Fig. 3 I have indicated that greater length may be given the guide and support by showing the support as broken ofi at X and the guide as broken off at y.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
In combination with the frame and grinding mechanism of a scissors-grinding machine, a support lying parallel with and longitudinal of the frame and having an integral adjustable in the frame, a guide longitudi-' nally adjustable and revolubly supported in the support, an integral arm projecting up at right angles from the guide, an integral jaw on the standard, an adjustable j aw eonnected therewith, and a set-screw adjacent thereto, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
