To all whom it may concern):
Be it known that I, HEZEKIAH CASEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Schuyler and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Disk-Sharpener, of which the following'is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in disk Sharpeners, particularly for disks of the order used inharrows;-and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a machine of substantial and compact construction and capable of ready manipulation, whereby to cut, at will, and at any desired angle or' bevel, either side or both sides of a rotating disk at its peripheral edge to sharpen the said edge; second, to provide a mechanism adapted for being readily applied to cut or shave off a disks edge at any desired bevel on either side, without checking or stopping the rotary motion of the disk, or without altering the cutting knife or knives, or other cutting tool or tools in a holder or holders; third, to retate a disk, and, at the same time, hold its edge firmly in position while cutting or shaving and thereby removing portions of its surfacejto bevel and sharpen the disks edge; fourth, to provide a mechanism with knives or analogous devices to be actuated by a single lever handle, for cutting, on the opposite sides the rotating disks edge at predetermined angles, and in succession; fifth, to provide a disk sharpener mechanism with suitable appliances whereby a single lever handle may operate separate knives or analogous devices, applying either knife, at will, on its respect.- ive side of a rotating disk; sixth, to provide a compact disk sharpener machine capable of being wholly operated by the attendant, wherein the rotary motion of a disk is imparted by one hand of the operator while his other hand is employed in applying a knife or other analogous device,.to the rotating disk; and seventh, to provide a disk sharpener with suitable cutting appliances and means whereby the rotary motion to be imparted to a disk may be given by the operator in charge, or may be produced bysteam power or other suitable power mechanism. I attain these objects by the mechanism hereinafter described andillustrated in the accompany-'- ing drawings, in which latter- Figure l is a top plan View of a machine embodying my invention wherein knives are used for cutting, and thereby sharpening the disks as they are one by one rotated by the machine until sharpened. Fig. 2 is a side elevation from the disk side of the machine. Fig. 3 is asimilar view from the opposite side of the machine. Fig. 4 is an end elevation, fronting which the attendant is to stand in operating the hand lever actuating the move ments of the knives.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The table or platform A, and its legs or standards B B constitute the frame work of the machine. A fly Wheel 0, a belt wheel D and a small spur wheel E are carried upon one end a of a shaft F, the other end of the shaft being held on the top of the platform A by a box a securely fastened by bolts a passing into the platform.- Meshing with said spur wheel E is a large spur wheel G which latter is fixed upon a shaft H to rotate therewith, said shaft being held in journal boxes a bolted to the top of the platform A. The shaft I-I, near its opposite end, is provided with a flange I, and the extreme end of the shaft is screw threaded and provided with a nut K and washer is said flange I, nut K and washer Z0, together with the screw threaded shaft I-I serving to form a clamp to hold the disk, as for example, the harrow disk L, securely upon the end of the shaft H and to rotate the same, as the shaft rotates, for the purpose of cutting or otherwise beveling its edge and thereby sharpeningit.
A slotted slide M carries a double lever, the long arms N 0 thereof being connected by a cross-bar P pivotally attached, as clearly shown in the top plan view Fig. 1. The outer end of the arm N is provided with a handle m The said lever arms N O'are attached at the point of their intersection to the slotted slide M by means of a nut m and bolt m, the said bolt serving as a fulcrum pin.- The lever arm N is extended inwardly past the fulcrum pin, this extension being the short arm n of the lever (N n), and to it is fastened a t nee... n.
knife Q by means of one or more small bolts 12.. The short arm being an extension of the other lever arm 0 (the two parts forming the lever O 0), is likewise provided with a knife R fastened thereto byone or more bolts 0. Thelever N at, the cross-bar I, and the lever O 0 form what I call the double lever N n, P, O 0, which, as before stated, is pivotally fastened to the top of the slotted slide M, by means of a nut m and bolt m, as before stated, and as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The slotted slideM is provided with two slots m m through which latter bolts m m pass, having their screw-threaded ends fastened into the platform A, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the enlarged heads of the bolts m m serving to hold the slide oloselyup against the end of the platform Aand yet permitit freely to move back and forward as it rest-supon the bolts. The reciprocatory movements of this slotted slide M are imparted by a hand lever S, said lever having a handle s, a rock: bar or rock-rod S- passing through two collars or boxes 5 bolted fastnnder the base of the platform A, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the end of the rock-bar nearest the slide M being a turned-up slotted arm 8 the slotted arm 8 by means of its slot .9 afiording a sliding bearing for the pin or bolt m projecting from the side of the slide M, to work in.
A disk gage T is adjustably secured by means of a slot t and a headed screw bolt upon the top of the platform'A, the forked end near the flange I carrying an iron roller 25 provided with short journals working in journal hearings in the forked end projections. This roller t works inside the disk L and flange I and near the knife R, and is for the purpose of firmly pressing against and holding the edge of the disk L'so that it shall be smoother regular as it comes to the knife. Either knife Q or knife R, whichever may be used, may be readily adjusted upon the platform A, as various circumstances may require. Where a large disk is being sharpened the roller t could obviously be more advantageously used farther from the axis of the shaft H carrying the disk than when a disk of a much smaller diameter is being sharpened, and hence the position of the roller t must be in accordance with the particular requirements of the case. A guard bar T is bolted to the top of the platform A as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, beneath which the lever arm N works. The knives Q and R, that serve to do the cutting or shaving of v the revolving disk in sharpening the same,
are made preferably of silver steel and are attached to the short lever arms n o of the levers N n, O 0, in such a manner that they strike the revolving disk at an angle of about forty-five degrees to the plane of the disks rotation. They cut the disk and do not scrape it.
In some cases files or other implement-s or articles having suitably hard and rough abrading surfaces might be employed as substitutes for the knives, when it should be desired to manor file or grind the sides 'of thed'isk at its edge to bevel and sharpen said disk, but I prefer to use for this purpose the knives as above stated.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The attendant takes hold of the handle 5 of the lever S and rocks said lever in its bearings, and by means of its short slotted arm 8 and its connection with the slide M, moves the latter to the desired position for holding the knives in readiness to be applied by the double-lever mechanism. The attendant, if relying on his own manual power to run the machine, stands in front of it, and with his right hand grasps the handle con the flywheel O, and turns said wheel and its shaft handle to the left applies the 'knife Q to the, rotating disk L, said knife being carried on the short arm n of the lever N n, and moving said handle to the right applies the knife R carried on the short arm 0 of the lever O 0, the cross-bar P serving to communicate the movement of lever N n to lever O 0. In other words, standing with face to disk the attendant by moving the arm Nof the main lever N n (of the double lever N n, P, O 0) to the left, puts the left knife Q against the left side of the disk, and moving said lever arm N to the right puts the right knife R against the right sideof the disk. Butone knife cuts at a time. It is obvious that a belt may be applied to the pulley wheel D, and power from steam, or other motor power mechanism, be used to rotatethe shafts and the disk.
I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction of parts as described and shown, as the same may be variously modified without departing from the essential features of my invention.
I claim- 1. t In a disk sharpener, the combination with a supporting. frame and a rotary disk-carrying shaft mounted thereon, of a slide also mounted on said frame and movable toward and from said shaft in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis thereof, and one or more sharpening appliances pivotally mounted on said slide and movable toward and from the edge or edges of the rotating disk to be sharpened.
2. In adisk sharpener, the combination with a disk-carrying shaft and means for rotating the same, of a movable sharpening device to be pressed against one side of the disk to be sharpened, and a gage secured to the table of a supporting frame and a rotary disk-carry- V a ing shaft mounted thereon, of two levers pro vided with sharpening devices arranged to be brought into contact with the opposite sides of the edge of a disk carried by said shaft.
4. In adisk sharpener, the combination with a supporting frame and a rotary disk-carrying shaft mounted thereon, of two connected levers mounted on a common pivot and having their shorter arms provided with sharpening devices arranged to be alternately brought into contact with the opposite edges of the disk to be sharpened.
5. In a disk sharpener, the combination with a supporting frame and a rotary disk-carrying shaft mounted thereon, of two levers sustained by said supporting frame and having their shorterarms provided with sharpening devices, and a rigid link or cross-bar connecting the longer arms of said levers, whereby the said sharpening devices are held separated from each other but are adapted to be alternately brought into contact with the opposite sides of a disk to be sharpened.
6. In a disk sharpener, a slide carrying a double lever provided with knives, in combination with a shaft carrying a clamp for holding a disk, and means for rotating said shaft, substantially as and for the purpose described.
7. In a disk sharpener, a double lever mechanismthe short lever arms thereof provided 0 with knives and supported on a slide, in combination with a rotary shaft carrying a disk clamp, substantially as and for the purpose described.
8. In a disk sharpener, the combination with a supporting frame and a rotary disk-carrying shaft mounted thereon, of a slide also mounted on said supporting frame and movable in a plane transverse to the longitudinal axis of said shaft, a lever handle for advancing and retracting said slide, and one or more levers pivotally mounted on said slide and provided at their forward ends with sharpening devices.
9. In a disk sharpener, the combination with the table A, of the disk-carrying shaft H mounted thereon, a driving shaft geared to said shaft H, the slide M movable toward and from said shaft H, and the sharpening appliances carried by said slide. w
10. In a disk sharpener, the combination with the table A, of the disk-carrying shaft H mounted thereon, a driving shaft geared to said shaft H, the slide M movable toward and from said disk-carrying shaft, the sharpening appliances carried by said slide, and the diskgage T adjustably attached to said table.
