UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COMBINED MATCH-SAFE AND MAILING-CARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 26, 1907.
Application filed. March 28, 1906. Serial No. 808,512.
To all 10/1 0110 (it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OORNELIA GRUNDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paducah, in the county of McCracken and State of Kentucky, have invented anew and useful Combined Match Safe and Mailing- Card, of which thefollowing is aspecification.
This invention relates to acombined mailing-card and match-safe, and has for its object to provide an. advertising novelty in form of a; mail-card, which may be conveniently folded .to-produce atwall pocket 'or re ceptaclefor thereception of matches.
A further object of the invention is to-provide a mailing-card having fold-lines and provided with. a match-striking surface, said card being also provided with a corner-loop, so that when thecard. is folded to produce a match-safe the latter may be conveniently suspended from a nail or other suitable suport.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the face of theblank or mailingcard. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the rear portion of the card. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the manner of folding the blank or card. Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the folded or completed match-safe.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The improved device consists of a mailingcard or blank 5, formed of cardboard, paper, or other suitable material, and preferably rectangular in shape, as shown, said card having written, stamped, or otherwise printed on one face thereof the name of the sender and on its opposite face the name and address of the person to whom the card is to be delivered. One face of the card is provided with a plurality of converging fold-lines 6 extending from the opposite corners of the card to one longitudinal edge thereof, there being similar fold-lines 7 extending from the upper edge of said card and having their converging ends united at a point adjacent the lower edge of the card, as shown. That portion of the card beneath the united ends of the fold-lines 7 and designated at 8 is adapted to be detached or severed when the card is folded, the intermediate portion of the card at the converging ends of the several fold-lines being preferably gummed or provided with suitable adhesive material 9 to assist in holding the sections 13 in position when the blank is folded. The card is provided with triangular-shaped match-striking surfaces 10, disposed one on each end of the card, and preferably extending'from one corner thereof to the lower longitudinal edge of said card, as shown, the adjacent edges of the match-striking surfaces at the bottom of the card being spaced apart to permit the intermediate portion of said card to be conveniently folded. Secured to one corner of the card or blank is a supportingdoop 11, provided with a flap 12, one side of which 'is gummed and adapted to engage the rear wall of one of the match-striking surfaces when the blank is folded to produce the matchsafe, whereby the latter may be conveniently suspended upon a nail or other suitable suport.
p In folding the blank the severable portion 8 is first detached, after which the blank is folded on the lines 7 and the sections 10 folded laterally on the lines 6, said sections being subsequently united by pasting the flap 12 over the adjacent section 10 and pressing the gummed portion 9 with the side walls or sections 13, thereby forming the match-receptacle 14, as best shown in Figs. 3 and 1 of the drawings. It will thus be seen that when the blank is folded the name of the sender will be displayed on the front of the receptacle 1 1, while that portion of the blank on which is printed name of the party to whom the card is sent will be hid den from view.
Attention is called to the fact that the loop 11 not only forms a means for retaining the blank in folded position, but also serves as a means for supporting the match-safe.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that there is provided an extremely simple, inexpensive, and efficient device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A combined match-safe blank and maildownwardly in contact ing-eard having fold-lines and provided with a match-striking surface, and a supportingloop secured to one corner of the blank and provided with a flap.
A combined match-safe blank and mailing-card having foldlines and provided with match-striking surfaces, said blank being provided with a portion disposed between the match-striking surfaces which is severed when the blank is folded.
3. A combined match-safe blank and mailing-card having fold-lines and provided with match-striking surfaces, said card having a portion extending from one edge of the card and intersecting the fold-lines which is severed when the blank is folded.
4. A combined match-safe blank and mailing-card comprising a substantiall rectangular body portion having a match-striking surface at each end thereof and extending from each upper corner of the body portion to the lower longitudinal edge thereof, the intermediate portion of the blank being provided with fold-lines.
5. A combined matcl1safe blank and mailing-card comprising a substantially rectangular body portion having its opposite ends provided with match-striking surfaces and its intermediate portion formed with foldlines, and a loop secured to one corner of the body portion and provided with a gummed fla v 5 A combined match-safe blank and mailing-card comprising a body portion having its opposite ends'provided with match-striking surfaces and its intermediate portion formed with diverging fold-lines, said body portion being provided with a gummed surface and having a portion extending between the gummed surface the card which is severed when the blank is folded.
7. A match-safe comprising a plurality of sections having match-striking surfaces, a receptacle connecting said sections, and a supporting-loop secured to one section and engaging the adjacent section.
8. A match-safe comprising a plurality of sections having match-striking surfaces, a receptacle connecting said sections, and a supporting-loop carried by one of said sections and provided with a gunnned flap for engagement with the adjacent section.
9. A match-safe comprising a pair of substantially triangular-shaped sections each provided with a match-striking surface and connected by a flexiblestrip forming a match containing receptacle, and a loop secured to one of said sections and provided with a gummed flap adapted to engage the adjacent section.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
