CHARLES S. KRAFFT, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA.
COMBINATION PQKER AND CLlNKER-HOOK.
Speccaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 26, 1907.
Appiicaiioii ned Apiii 1o, 1906. serial No. 310,955.
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. KRAFFT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evansville, county of Vanderburg, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Pokers and Clinker-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combination pokers and clinker-hooks.
The object of my invention is the provision of an improved device of simple and inexpensive, as well as durable, construction which will be adapted for the rapid and easy removal of clinkers from stoves or furnaces and for use as a poker.
Another object of the invention is the provision in a device of the class described of an improved and novel association of a clinkerhook and gripper slidable one within the other and a connection for locking them in a certain predetermined relation, together with a spring for causing relative movement of the clinker-hook and gripper.
The details of the invention are set forth hereinafter, and the novel features are recited in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view; Fig. 2, a horizontal section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, an enlarged detail view of the improved locking connection between the gripper and the clinker-hook, also showing the spring.
The clinker-hook 1 is of metal and of such form that it can vyield to accommodate the clinker even if a little too large to be properly received therein. This clin {er-hook is rigidly connected to a tubular shank 2, which is provided with bayonet-joint slots 3 on opposite sides thereof at the opposite end thereof from the clinker-hook 1.
The gripper 4 is tubular and slides within the shank 2, said gripper 4 being provided with a tip or point 5, adapted to be projected into the clinker-hook 1. Any suitable handle 6 is provided on the opposite end of the gripper 4. On opposite sides of the gripper 4 are headed knobs orV pins 7, which are received in the bayonet-joint slots 3. Located within the gripper 4 and connected to the handle end 6 thereof is a contractile coil-spring 8, the other end of which issecured to a crosspin 9, fastened to the shank 2 and extending transversely thereof, suitable slots 10 being provided in the gripper 4 to receive the crosspin 9 and permit the gripper 4 to slide within the shank 2.
When it is desired to remove a clinker from a stove or furnace fire-box, the shank 2 is grasped in one hand and the handle 6 in the other, and the gripper is drawn outwardly against the action of spring 8 and given a twist to turn the knobs or pins 7 into the transverse parts of the bayonet-joint s lots 3, whereupon the gripper is held in retracted position. The device is then manipulated to cause the clinker to pass into the clinker-hook l, and when it is suitably received therein the handle 6 is given a reverse twist to bring the pins or knobs 7 into the long parts of the bayonet-joint slots 3, whereupon the spring 8 draws the gripper 4 into the shank 2 and causes the tip 5 to be projected into the clinkerhook 1 and against the clinker, thereby securin@- the clinker in the hook 1, and the operator can then easily remove the clinker from the fire-box.
The entire device may be used as a poker as well as a clinker-hook, the gripper 4 (when projected as shown in Fig. l) forming an abutment for any slight springing of the hook 1 when poking about in the ire.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a combination poker and clinkerhook, the combination with a tubular shank and a clinker-hook secured thereto, of a gripper slidable inside the tubular shank aforesaid and having an end adapted to be projected into the clinker-hook, and a spring coperating with the gripper and shank aforesaid which tends to draw the gripper into the shank and to project the end of the gripper into the clinker-hook.
2. In a combination poker and clinkerhook, the combination with a tubular shank and a clinker-hook secured thereto, of a grip- 'per slidable inside the tubular shank aforesaid and havin@ an end adapted to be projected into the clinker-hook, a spring coperating with the gripper and shank aforesaid which tends to draw the gripper into the shank and to project the end of the gripper into the clinker-hook, and means adapted for locking the gripper and shank together with the gripper in withdrawn or retracted position.
3. In a combination poker and clinkerhook, the combination with a tubular shank IOO and e @linker-hook secured thereto, of e ripper siideble inside the tubular shank a oresaid and having an end adapted to be projected into the @linker-hook, e spring coperating with the gripper end shank aforesaid which tends to drew the gripper into the shank and to project the end of the gripper into the clinker-hook, and means adapted for locking the gripper and shank together with the gripper in Withdrawn or retracted position comprising e beyonet-point between seid gripper and shank.
4. In a combination poker and ciinkerhook, the combination with a tubular shank and e clinker-hook secured thereto, seid tubular shank having bayonet-joint slots and e cross-pin, 'of e gripper shdeble Within the turv buler shank and having en end adapted to be proj eeted into the clinker-hook, seid gripper being provided With pins or members Which zo CHARLES S. IIIIAITIW.
