To alt whom t may concern;
Be it known that l, ROBERT R. MACGILL, a citizen of theUnited States, and a resident of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have in- Sanitary Mouthpiece-Guard, of which thefollowing is a' full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to sanitary guards for mouthpieces, and is especially useful in` connection with the mouthpieces of telephone-transmitters- Theobject of the invention is to provide a simple and e'lllcient'device of this kind which will insure the user of the device protection against disease germs', and which permits the applicationl of new disinfectant material/for each user of the device lwithout necessitating lthe removal of the-'samefroin the telephone.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide a device of this character which can be attached to and removed from any telephone-mouth piece and which is i'neXpen? sive to manufacture. I
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, to be more fully. described hereinafter, and particularly set forth inthe claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view from the rear of my invention as applied to the mouthpiece of a telephone-transmitter. Fig. 2 is avertical cross-section showing the mouth; piece in 'dotted outlines. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the device, and Figjt is a front elevation of the same.
Referring more particularly tothe drawings, i provide a shield l, which may be formed from a properlystamped blanlpf e tubular holder .2, for a purpose to be described hereinafter. @ne 'end of this tubular lichter is ciosed by a cap i4, soldered or other-. wise secured in place, while the other end is provided with a removable ca 3. n the shield is an opening e, preferably circular in form apd slightly smaller in diameter than the opening of the .telephone-mouthpiece. in the edges of this opening are formed lateral fingers 5 andy a lng 6. The fingers are bent rearwardly' and are provided for the 'purpose of engaging with the edge ofthe mouthpiece of the telephone. The lug t is also bent rear- Specicatonof Letters Patent.

wardly and is providedl with a set-screw Tin a properly-threaded opening, by means of which the shield may be securely attached to the mouthpiece. 'lhe shield l is provided with lateral extensions near `the lower ex tremity thereof, which are bent back upon it to form clips 8, for a purpose to be described hereinafter.
Within thetubular holder l is'located a material, which may be impregnated with a sritable disinfectant chemical. One end 12 of this sheet ofdisinfected material is passed through a slot 9, formed between is formed in the tubular holder and which projects slightly over the shield. rThe sanitary material l2 lies adjacent to the shield and ycovers the opening 4L, which registers with the opening of the mouthpiece and is .retained in position against the shield by being passed under the clips 8. composing-the roll in theholder may bel 'of paper or other suitable substance and may be in onecontinnons strip or divided into sections by spaced lines of transverse perforations, which tions thereof. separate sheets.
lt will be understood that the interposition between the mouth of the speaker and the receiving apparatt's of the telephone of a thin sheet of paper will not interfere with the transmission of the sonnds and that this'intermediation of the sanitary'material will afford sufficient protection against disease germs which may have becomes: secreted around the mouthpiece. It is intended that each user of the instrumentibefore beginning shall pulldown upon the sanitary material, and thus opening, tearing off If so desired, it'may be 1n the section employed by lower side 13 of the shield, which may be given a cutting'edge to facilitate this. .it will of course be preferable to impregnate the sanitary material with a disinfectant substance; butthis is not absolutely necessary, as parchment paper, for instance, would in itself afford sufficient protection of this character.
. lt will of course be nnderstood that when one roll is usedup it will be very easy to provide the device with another roll b removing the cap-3, placing the roll in t 'e holder with an in the slot 9,and then drawing roll 11, of parchment paper or other suitable the shieldand the edge l() of that section thereof which facilitate the removal of porl the last user of the instrument against the The material l draw an unused section over the "I IOO thin l ei1d` downward ond passing 'it- .l beneath .a
