To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, \VILLIAM WV. DE N. a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Elyria, county of Lorain, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attachments for Transmitters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an attachment for transmitters, my object being to provide an IQ attachment for holding a plate provided with a number or other indicia and which may be readily applied to the ordinary transmitter without any change in the construction thereof and without in any manner affectingthe I5 same, so that if again removed the transmitter presents the same appearance as before the attachment was applied.

A further object is to provide an attachment so that numbers or other identifyingmarks may be applied thereto in a convenient manner and in which they may be conveniently changed at any time and when in position on the instrument are held in a conspicuous position and preferably upon the face of 5 the transmitter front plate.

To the accomplishment of these objects and such others as may hereinafter appear I preferably provide a light open framework, which for appearance sake may be nickel-plated,

3 and integrally connect therewith a ring, through which the threaded end of the usual hard-rubber mouthpiece is adapted to pass and by means of which saidring is clamped be tween the annular shoulder of the said mouthpiece and the forward edge of the centrallyraised portion of the front plate. This attachment is readily formed by stamping the same from light sheet metal and forming the same in suitable dies, so that the open frame lies fiat against the smooth surface of the outer face of the front plate. This frame is preferably arc-shaped or segmental and lies wholly within the outer periphery of the circular front plate, and thus-presents a neat appearance. The radial edges of the segmental frame are preferably turned in to receive the paper or other removable slip upon which the number or other 1nd1e1a is printed.

A transparent celluloid or other strip may be readily slipped into the frame thus constructed with 5 the number-slip beneath, and a highly-satis factory number-plate is thus secured. Asuitable lug may be provided upon the outer rim of the segmental frame to prevent the undesired removal of the number-slip and eelluloid plate.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which the same reference characters designate like parts through out the several views, and in which-- Figure 1 is a front view in perspective of a telephone-transmitter with the attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a front view of the attachment itself. Fig. 3 is a sectional view upon the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view 5 of the segmental paper slip upon which the indicia may be printed. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the transparent slip, which is preferably celluloid; and Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view upon the line 6 6 of Fig. 1. 7

The ordinary telephone-transmitter is provided with a front plate 2 of the type shown in the drawings, which usually consists of a casting of suitable material provided with an annular shoulder, as at 3, that is adapted to fit into the forward edge of a suitable metal cup or solid back, as it is usually termed. This front piece is provided with a central opening having a raised rim 4, that is internally threaded to receive the screw-threaded end of the hard-rubber or other insulating mouthpiece 5. This mouthpiece is provided with an annular shoulder (5, adapted under ordinary conditions to engage the forward edge 7 of the said rim 4. 5

The attachment, as shown more clearly in Figs. 2 and 3, comprises a light open segmental or arc-shaped frame 8, preferably of light metal, consisting of the radiating end pieces 99, the outer curved rim 10, and the 9 inner curved side 11. Formed integrally with the side 11 is a ring 12, said ring 12 and the frame 8 being in differentplanes, as shown in Fig. 3, and connected together by the side or bent neck 11. The ring 12 is adapted to receive the threaded inner end of the mouthpiece and to fit between the shoulder 6 of the mouthpiece and the forward edge 7 of the rim 1 of the front plate and to be clamped in position by the said mouthpiece and rim. The rearwardly-depressed side or neck 11 permits the frame 8 to fit closely against the face of the front plate 2. The ends 9 of frame 8 are provided with inwardly-turned edges 13, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, to receive and hold in place the celluloid and paper slips 1 1 and 15 of Figs. 5 and 4. A lug 16 is preferably provided at the upper edge of the rim 10, and which for convenience is formed integral therewith. A celluloid or other transparent plate 14 of the form shown in Fig. 5 is of such size as to be easily slipped into the frame and held by the ends 9 and edges 13 thereof. The paper slip 15, bearing the number or other marks, is of the same form and size and is slipped into position in the same way in the rear of the plate 1A. hen the frame is clamped in position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 6, the number upon the paper slip 15 may be readily seen through the opening in the frame 8, and both slips are prevented from being taken out by the lug 16.

The form of the connecting member 11 may be varied to accommodate the different rims of the various styles oftransmitters, and many other changes may readily be made to adapt the attachment to different types of transmitters.

It will be observed that the attachment is readily applied to the transmitter without changing its construction in any manner and without marring or otherwise disfiguring the same, so that in case it is later desired to dispense with the attachment the transmitterfront is unharmed. The number may be readily changed when the lug 16 is employed by unscrewing the mouthpiece, so as to unloosen the frame 8 and permit the paper 15 to be removed and another to be slipped in its place. Other arrangements are possible; but to prevent the too easy removal of the slip, as well as the liability of its dropping out of the frame in case it or the transmitter should be turned over, I prefer to employ the arrangement shown. Still other advantages of this arrangement are that the information card or plate is not mutilated by providing an opening therein for the mouthpiece and may be readily inserted in the holder or removed therefrom without the trouble of entirely removing the mouthpiece or the liability of dropping or losing any parts.

While I have thus described one specific form of my invention, 1 do not wish to be limited in all respects thereto, as it is obvious that various changes and alterations may be made therein without departing from the scope or principle of the same; but,

Having thus described the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. An attachment for telephone-transmitters consisting of a light open frame adapted to receive a number or other slip and provided with a ring at its inner end to receive the inner end of the mouthpiece by means of which it is clamped in position upon the front plate of the transmitter, substantially as described.

2. A telephone-transmitter having a diaphragm boX and a mouthpiece supported thereon, and a detachable holder having elongated and outwardly -divergent overturned lips to engage the edges of an information card or plate and provided with a fastening member adapted to be held in place between the face of the box and the mouthpiece, the holder being located wholly within the periphery of the box-face.

3. A telephone-transmitter having a diaphragm-box provided with a threaded opening, and a mouthpiece having a shank screwed thereinto, combined with a holder having an annular, flat fastening member adapted to surround the shank of the mouthpiece and be held thereby with the holder against the face of the box, said holder having opposite, overturned and elongated outwardlydivergent lips to engage the edges of an information.

card or plate, the holder being located wholly within the periphery of the box-face.

4. A telephone-transmitter having a diaphragm box and a mouthpiece supported thereon, a segmental holder having openings therein and with its edges overturned to form outwardly-divergent lips, and an annular fastening member connected by a bent neck with the holder, the fastening member being adapted to be held between the face of the box and the mouthpiece while the bent neck permits the lips to rest against the box-face, the holder thereby forming with it a receptacle for an information-card.

5. An attachment for telephone-transmitters consisting of a light framework adapted to receive a number-plate or other information-card and having an opening to expose said plate or card and provided with a part at one side of the opening to receive the inner end of the mouthpiece by means of which it is adapted to be clamped in position upon the front plate of the transmitter.

6. An attachment for telephone-transmitters consisting of a light open framework having its edges rearwardly overturned to form lips to receive a number-plate or other information-card, and a fastening member connected by a bent neck with the inner edge of the said framework, the fastening member being adapted to be clamped between the face of the transmitter front plate and the mouthpiece while the bent neck permits the framework to rest against the surface of the said front plate.

7. A number or other information cardholder for telephone-transmitters formed of sheet metal and comprising a plate having its edges formed to receive the number or information card and a device at its inner portion to receive the mouthpiece of the transmitter by means of which the holderis adapted to be clamped in position upon the front piece of the transmitter, said device being connected with said plate by an intermediate bent portion whereby the holder conforms to the sur face of the front piece.

8. An attachment for telephone-transmitters consisting of a plate adapted to carry a number or other indicia and having a fastening member adapted to receive the inner end of the mouthpiece of the transmitter, said fastening member being connected with the said plate by means of a bent neck, whereby when the attachment is clamped in position by the mouthpiece the plate conforms to the surface of the front plate.

9. The combination with a telephone-transmitter of a plate conforming to the face of the transmitter front plate and having a fastening member connected with said plate through the medium of a bent neck and by means of which member said plate is clamped in position upon said front plate by the mouthpiece of the transmitter, and an information card or plate held in the rear of said plate between it and the face of the front plate, said plate' having an opening therein to expose to view the indicia upon said information card or plate, substantially as described. v

10. An attachment for telephone-transmitters consisting of means for holding a removable number-plate or other information-card and a part at one side of said means to receive the inner end of the mouthpiece of the transmitter by which said plate or card holding means is adapted to be clamped u pou the front plate of the transmitter, whereby the mouthpiece is not required to pass through the said information card or plate and the latter may be inserted in or removed from said means without entirely removing the mouthpiece from the front plate.
