UNITED STATES AUGUST KOLB, OF BASEL, SWITZERLAND.
INSET CLAMP FOR VISES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 19, 1907.
Application iiletl November 2, 1906. Serial No, 341,704.
Be it known that I, AUGUST KOLB, a citizen of the French Republic, and a resident oli Basel, Switzerland, have invented an Improved Inset Clamp for Vises, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact speciiication.
The object of the invention relates to inset clamps for vises the jaws of which are closed by closing the vise-jaws between which they are introduced.
The invention is distinguished vfrom the clamps of this kind previously known by the `feature that the holding-jaws of the improved clamp are arranged so as to extend above a supporting-plate 'for the work and are vertically adjustable with regard to this plate, so that the work supported by the plate can easily be seized by the clamp-jaws at the desired point, because the work does not need to be held during the closing of the vise.
In the accompanying drawings an embodiment of the invention is illustrated, as follows:
Figure l shows the same in front elevation inserted into a vise. F ig. 2 shows a vertical section, and Fig. 3 a side elevation of Fig. 2.
The two jaws a b of the clamp are hinged together by means of the screw-bolt c in the well-known manner and are normally held apart by means of the spring n. Their jaw ends project upward through a slot o oi the supporting-plate e for the work. They pos- Sess on the outside a roughened face p to allow the gripping of the vise-jaws. 'Ihe screw-bolt c is guided by means of a guidepiece q in a vertical slot d of a pendent bar]` on the under side oi' the plate e `for the werk and can be moved up and down in this slet, so that the jaws a b, supported on it, are capable of being adjusted vertically. It possesses on both sides of the pendent barf two disks or washers g 7L and can be held fast in position by tightening the set-nut t. The adjustment of the screw-bolt c in the slot d can be effected by means of the screw AIt', proceeding from the guide-piece g of the bolt, and a collared nut m thereon.
On the use of the clamping device the jaws a l) are so adjusted by means ol the nut 'm with regard to the work-supporting plate e that they may take hold of the work 3 at the desired point, which work is merely laid upon the plate e. Hereupon the nut i is tightened and the clamp placed in the vise, in which it supports itself by means of the plate c upon the jaws 1 and 2 of the vise. It' now the vise be closed, its aws will simultaneously close the jaws a I) of the clamp, and the work under operation will'thus be held vtast at the adjusted point bythe jaws a b,whereby the work does not need to be held by hand during the closing oi`4 the vise.
The words vertical and vertical direction are here used only in a descriptive sense. In the drawings the adjustment of the jaws a andA b is in a vertical direction. The vise V, F ig. l, might be inclined or horizontal instead of upright, as herein shown. The invention is not limited in this respect. In Fig. l, S designates the screw of the vise, and II its operating-handle.
lVhat I claim is l. An inset clamp for vises, having a supporting-platc provided with an aperture for the clamp-jaws, clamping-j aws which project through said aperture and are adjustable with reference to thc plate, and means for moving said jaws moreor less through said aperture, for the purpose specified.
2. An inset clamp lor vises, having clamping-jaws, a supporting-plate for the work, a vertically-movable carrier upon which the jaws are pivoted, means for guiding said carrier in the vertical direction and means for securing the carrier of the jaws in every po-v sition into which it may have been adjusted.
3. An inset clamp for vises, having clamping-jaws, a supporting-plate Vfor the work, a displaceable bolt upon which the aws are pivoted, a pendent part on the under side of said supporting-plate, a vertical slot in this pendent part for vertically guiding said displaceable bolt, a screw device to adjust the latter together. with the jaws in the vertical direction with regard to said supporting plate, and a setting device to secure the displaceable bolt in its adjusted position.
..An inset-clamp for vises, having two clamping-jaws, a supporting-plate for the work, a displaceable screw-bolt upon which the jaws are pivoted, a pendent part on the under side of said supporting-plate, a vertical slot in this pendent part for vertically guiding said screw-bolt, an adjusting-screw connected to the lattter7 a rotatable nut screwed on this screw and secured against Vertical displacement, and a settinO-nut placed upon the screw part of the seid bolt to allow tightening thereof in its adjusted position.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name, this 23d day of October,
AUGUST KOLB.
