To all "whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LEWIS A. BELLIS and VALTER A. Bnnnonnn, citizens of the United States, residing at Somerville, in the county of Somerset and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar-Vises, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The invention relates to improvements in jar Vises, and pertains more particularly to vises of the portable type.
It is an object of the invention to provide a jar vise having a pair of opposed independently adjustable aws in which one jaw is capable of a relatively greater adjustment than the other to accommodate the device for use with jars of different sizes, while the complementary jaw is normally set and employed as a stop for the initial adjustment of the first mentioned aw. The complementary jaw is adapted to have a predetermined limited movement for effecting the forced clamping of the jar between the jaws, preventing thereby the breaking or crushing of the jar.
More specifically the device comprises a body having a pair of jaws each carrying yieldable jar engaging strips one of the jaws being set to engage a and prevent its movement in one direction, while the complementary jaw has a pawl and ratchet connection with the vise permitting the same to be adjusted and held in contact with the opposite side of the jar. After this initial adjustment the first mentioned jaw having a toggle connection with the body is moved a predetermined limited distance to compress the yieldable jar engaging strips and effecting the final clamping of the jar between the jaws. The eX tent of adjustment of this jaw is proportionate to the compressibility of the yieldable jar engaging strips, so that while this jar is firmly held upon the initial adjustment of the jaw, the movement of the jaw is predetermined and eliminates any danger of crushing the jar.

Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with a jar in position to be clamped, the clamping mechanism being illustrated in its several positions.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein like numerals indicate corresponding parts, the supporting base of the vise consists of the relatively long strip 1 having a recess 2 passing therethrough receiving the transverse strip 3 forming with the strip 1 the supporting base for the device. The transverse strip 3 at each end has a downturned portion 4, while the longitudinal strip 1 at one end is provided with a similar downturned portion to which are fitted buffers 4t of any suitable material, prcferably rubber or the like. These buffers rest upon the surface of the support to which the device is clamped and prevent the marring or scratching of this surface. A jar seat 5, is secured to the strips 1 and 2, this seat being of any desired construction and preferably composed of a metallic plate and attached to the strips where they cross each other.
As a convenient means for attaching the device to a table or like support a bracket 6 of U-shaped formation is attached to the strip 1 and carries an adjustable screw 7 passing through the lower arm of the bracket and having a portion adapted to engage the under surface of a table or the like supported to clamp the device in position. During the fastening of the vise to the table the buffers disposed under the base strips 1 and 2 contact with the upper surface of the table and while the vise is firmly held. in place the table is in no way scratched or marred. In order to support the projecting end of the strip 1 a diagonal brace 8 projects from the bracket and is attached to this strip near its outer end, the strip at this point usually overhanging the support for the device. The strip 1 on one side of the jar support 5 has a plurality of spaced ratchet teeth 9 extending entirely thereacross and adapted to cooperate with a pivot pawl 10 carried by the base of the jaw 11, and this jaw-is permitted to have a relatively great adjust ment so that the vise can accommodate jars of various sizes. The pawl 10 has a relatively wide ratchet engaging portion and.
portion engaging the base of the jaw and the pawl. The opposite end of the strip 1 is upturned and has a socket therein receiving an operating lever 12*, which lever has a curved end portion and for a purpose which will be later explained.
Adjacent the upturned end of the strip 1 is a jaw 13 mounted for a predetermined limited sliding movement upon the strip by means of a sleeve 13 passing around the base of this pawl and engaging the strip. As the jaws 11 and 13 are of the same specifie construction with the exception of the adjusting devices therefore a description of the formation of one of the jaws will suffice for both and a description of the jaw 11 will therefore be given. This jaw has a curved upturned portion adapted to conform as near as possible to the contour of a jar and lined or faced with a yieldable strip 16 which engages the side of the jar when the same is positioned between the jaws. A similar strip is preferably mounted upon the jaw 13, but it is clearly apparent that good results can be obtained with the use of but a single strip of yieldable material mounted upon one of the jar engaging portions. The jar engaging portion 16 is seated upon the upper end of an upstanding member 11 of the jaw while the jaw has a relatively long base riding upon the strip 1. The jar 13 normally occupies a set position as disclosed in Fig. 2, while the jaw 11 is capable of a relatively great adjustment-to accommodate jars of various sizes and permit-ting a jar to be positioned between the opposed jaws, the jaws after this initial adjustment engaging the sides of the jar so that a movement of the jar in either direction is absolutely prevented. When the aw 11 has been adjusted the same is retained in its adjusted position by the pivoted pawl heretofore described, this pawl being spring pressed and of such a construction that when stress is placed upon the jaw, it is very hard to disengage the same from its ratchet.
The connection between the pivoted lever 12 and the jaw 13 consists of a link pivotally attached to the inwardly extending curved end of this lever at one end, while the opposite end of the link is attached to the outstanding projection 18 of the jaw by a suitable pivot pin. Ihe adjustment of the jaw 13 is therefore predetermined, and upon the initial adjustment of the jaw 11 with respect to the jar mounted upon the jar seat 5, the link connection between the handle and the jaw 13 is broken as disclosed in dotted lines Fig. 2 and this jaw occupies its normal set position. When the handle is shifted the link 17 is extended and the jaw 13 moved forwardly a predetermined distance corresponding to the compressibility of the yielding jar engaging strips 16 carried by the jaws for finally clamping the jar by the jaws, the jaw 11 being retained in its adjusted position by the pivoted pawl, after which the lever 12 is shifted to straighten the link 17 and move the jaw 13 forwardly a predetermined distance. This forward movement of the jaw as illustrated in dotted lines Fig. 2 tightly compresses the yieldable strips 16 to finally clamp the jar but as the movement of the jaw is proportionate to the compressibility of the yielding strips,
it is impossible to fracture or crush the jar upon the jar seat 5. When it is desired to release the jar the handle 12 is moved upwardly, which breaks the link connection. between the jaw 13 and the upturned end of the strip 1 and allows the jar to be moved from its seat. However, a continued upward movement of the handle draws the jaw 13 back to its normal set position and permits the jar to be readily taken from the vise.
While we have shown and described the preferred embodiment of our invention, we wish it to be clearly understood that many changes in the combination, size and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim is 1. In a jarvise, the combination with a jar support, of a clamping jaw normally set to engage a jar and prevent its movement in one direction, of a complemental jaw capable of a substantial adjustment for engaging the opposite side of the jar, means for holding said latter jaw in its adjusted position firmly against the jar and the jar against the first mentioned jaw, means for imparting a limited definite movement to the first mentioned jaw for clamping the jar in position, and a yieldable member adapted to compensate for said limited movement of said first mentioned jaw whereby the jar is tightly clamped upon the adjustment of the first mentioned jaw, but crushing thereof prevented.
2. In a jar vise, the combination with a jar support, of a clamping jaw normally set to engage a jar and prevent its movement in one direction, a complemental jaw capable of a substantial adjustment adapted to firmly engage the other side of the jar, means for holding said latter jaw in its adjusted position against the jar and the jar against the first mentioned jaw, a yieldable member carried by one of said jaws and contasting with the jar, means for imparting a definite adjustment to the first mentioned jaw to permit the jar to be tightly clamped, said adjustment being the same regardless of the size of the jar and the compressibility of the yieldable member compensating for the adjustment of the first mentioned jaw to prevent the crushing of the jar.
3. In a jar rise, the combination with a jar support, of a clamping jaw normally set to engage the jar and prevent its movement in one direction, of a complemental jaw for engaging the opposite sides of the j ar, a yieldable jar engaging member carried by one of said jaws, means for adjusting and holding the last mentioned jaw into position against the jar and the jar against the first mentioned jaw, a link adjusting means for said first mentioned jaw adapted to impart a definite limited movement to the jaw after the adjustment of the latter jaw t0 tightly clamp the jar in position, the extent of adjustment of said first mentioned jaw being substantially proportionate to the compressibility of the yieldable jar engaging member.
