LAND-ROLLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 19, 1907.
Application filed May 11,1906- Serial No. 316,400.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN WEI/BER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elba, in the county of Genesee and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Land-Rollers, of which the ioll'owing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in land-rollers, and consists in the novel con struction, combination, and arrangement of partshereinafter described and claimed.
Thebbject of the invention is to provide a device of this character made of cement and metal, so that it will be simple in construction, durable in use, and comparatively'incxpensive to manufacture.
Further objects and advantages, as well as the structural features by means of which they are attained, will be made clear by an examination of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved land-roller. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal view between the rollers and showing the shaft in section. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section view; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of t e metal parts of one of the roller-sections assembled ready to receive the cement body.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes the frame, in which are mounted two similar roller sections or members 2. Each of the latter is made of a suitable plastic material 3, such as Portland cement, molded upon a metallic strengthening-frame 4, which is clearly'shown in Fig. 4 and comprises two circular metal'heads 5, connected by rods 6, and a concentric tube 7. The latter is prcferably in the form of a section of pipe and is adapted to receive the shaft upon which the roller rotates. The heads 5 are preferably cast and have inwardly-extending annular flanges 8, which protect the edges of the cement body 3 and prevent the same from chipping. The binding-rods 6 have their screwthrdaded ends projecting through apertures in the heads 5 to receive clamping-nuts 8, the latter 1 serving to clamp the heads against stop-collars upon the tube 7. Said rods bind together the cylindrical plastic body 3, and thereby prevent the same from cracking when it strikes stones or other hard objects.

from the frame 1. The latter is rectangular in form. and made, preferably, of front and rear longitudinal channel-metal bars 13, connected by transverse end channel-metal bars 14, said bars being suitably riveted or bolted together. The two outer hangers or brackets 10 12 are similar and are formed by bond ing fiat metal bars, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, so as to provide flat cent-ralportions 15,11 on which the ends of the shaft 9 are securec bv Ubolts or clips 16. The central hanger o r bracket 11 is formed from a flat metal bar bent edgewise, so that the space between the two rollers 2 is comparatively small, and hence but little unrolled land will be left behind the roller. The hanger 11 has its lower central portion formed with an opening 17, through which the shaft 9 extends, and its ends arebolted or otherwise secured to the frame 1, as are also the ends of the hangers 10 12. Secured upon the tops of the two bars or beams 13 of the frame 1 is a centrally-disposed forwardly-projecting draft tongue 18, and from the front of the central hanger 11 projects a draw-hook 19, to which 'a doubletree or other draft connection may be attached.
The construction, use, and advantages of v the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the following brief statement. By making the roller of cement and metal in the manner set forth it may be produced at less cost than rollers made of wood or of solid metal and will at the same time be heavier, stronger, and more durable. It will not be affected by ex osure to weather and will never rot or spit. No especially-constructed tools will be required for its manufacture nor will expert labor be necessary.
Various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit. or sacrificing any of the advantages of the appended claims.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1.' A land-roller comprising a frame, hangers depending therefrom, a shaft supported by the hangers, and rollers rotatably mounted upon the shaft, each of said rollers coniprising circular flanged heads, a tube connecting the heads and surroundin the shaft,
said tube serving as a bearing w ereby the roller rotates upon the shaft, strengtheningrods connecting the heads and arranged concentric of'the tube, and a cement body molded upon the heads, rods and tube, substantially as described.
2. A land-roller com rising a rectangular metallic frame, a centra and end hangersdeending therefrom, a draft-tongue upon said rame, a draw-hook u on said central hanger, a shaft fixed in said hangers, and rollers rotatably mounted u on said shaft between said hangers, each 0 said rollers comprising flanged heads, rods connecting said heads, a concentric tube connecting said heads to receive said shaft, and. a cement body molded 15 upon said heads, rods and tube, substantially as described.
