J. M. BEGKWITH.
DISPLAY RACK.
No. 599,925. Patented Mar. 1, 1898.
. NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. BEOKWITH, OF STREATOR, ILLINOIS.
DISPLAY-RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,925, dated March 1, 1898.
Application filed May 19 1897. Serial No. 637,285. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES M BEoKWITH, a resident of Streator, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display- Racks and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make an use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in display-racks, and more particularly to such as are adapted to display whips, the object of the invention being to provide a display-rack for whips which shall be simple in construction, comprise few parts, be cheap to manufacture, ornamental in appearance, which shall be light, but substantial and durable, and which shall be effectual in all respects in the performance of its functions.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a View illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a detail view.
A represents a base comprising a sleeve or hub 1 and a series of legs 2 secured thereto, each leg being provided at its lower end with a caster 3. The lower end of a standard B projects loosely through the sleeve or hub 1 and is adjustably secured therein by means of a set-screw 4.. The standard B is composed of several sections of pipe or rod 0. b c d, of gradually-decreasing diameters from the lower to the upper end of the standard, and the several sections are connected together by means of couplings 5 6 7. These couplings also serve to revolubly support a series of wheels 9 1O 11, of gradually-decreasing size from the bottom to the top of the series. The wheels 9 10 11 may be made round, or they may be made angular, if desired, as shown in the drawings. The various wheels or frames are braced by means of truss rods or wires 12, each pair of which are connected at their respective ends to two wheels or frames and adapted to cross between their ends, where they are preferably secured together.
The lower wheel or frame 9 is made with a number of sockets 13 for the reception of the butt-ends of whips, and the rings or frames 10 and 11 are made with notches let in their peripheries for the reception of the intermediate portions of the whips.
If desired, a suitable ornament 16 can be attached to the upper end of the standard B.
From the construction and arrangement of parts above described it will be seen that the wheels or frames, being connected together and braced by means of the truss ro ds' or wires, can be revolved simultaneously on their bearings on the couplings 5 6 7. A large number of whips can be displayed by means of my improved rack, and each whip will be kept in a straight position and thus avoid danger or damage to the whips, as will occur if they are permitted to remain bent or curved for any considerable length of time.
My improvements are Very simple in construction, ornamental in appearance, and effectual in every respect in the performance of their functions.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention-without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a display-rack, the combination with a sleeve or hub, of a series of legs secured thereto, a standard passing through said sleeve or hub, a set-screw for adjustably securing the standard to the sleeve or hub, a series of wheels or frames revolubly mounted on said standards and adapted to support whips, and braces connecting said wheels or frames so as to cause them to revolve together, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES M. BECKWITH.
