Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. VAN PATTEN, OF WEYAUWEGA, WISCONSIN.
l-MPROVEMENT IN BOOK-COVER PROTECTORS.
Specification thinning part of Letters Patent No. 84,397, dated November 24, 1868.
lWeyauwega, in the county of Waupaca and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Book- Covers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur.
To enable others skilled inthe art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it. A
My invention relates to book-cover protectors; and consists in covering the ordinary binding of books with tin or other suitable metal, for the purpose of protecting and preserving the binding, and in such a way as not to interfere with the use of the book.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section.
It is well known that the bindings of books that are constantly used become soiled, broken, and worn out, oftentimes long before the book itself ceases to be useless. School-books, especially, are frequently stripped of their v covers through the carelessness, indifference,
or wanton mischief of the owners or their companions. Valuable books are often poorly bound, or bound so as to require some suitable covering` for the purpose of preserving and protecting the binding.
To secure the preservation and protection of the covers or binding of books is-the object of my invention.
I construct my metallic bookcover protector out of tin or other suitable sheet metal, and
of diEerent sizes to t the different-sized books for which they may be intended. I make it in three part-s, A, B, and C. The parts A and B are made of the same size, and have their ends and front side turned over, so that they may be easily slid over the sides of the bookcover proper, as shown in Fig. 1. The rear or back ends or edges of the parts A and B, I hinge to the back-piece C, at a as shown in Figs. l and 2. The back-piece C is curved, so as to fit the back of the book, as shown in both figures.
The pin for uniting the parts A, B, and C, and forming the hinge, may be inserted after they are in position on the book-cover.
This metallic cover may be readily taken off and placed upon the cover of another book of similar size, by simply withdrawing the hingepin for removing itv from one book, and inserting it again when placed upon another.
It is obvious that my metallic bookcover may be made of any kind of sheet metal, and be ornamented with fancy designs by engraving, or by stamping or pressing.
In this way I am able to make a metallic cover for books or, similar articles which can be readily applied or removed, and which will protect and preserve the book-covers proper from wear or injury.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A metallic protector for book-covers, hinged and constructed substantially as and for the purpose herein described. v
