Be it known that I, VAssnL WV. VHITE, of Utica, in the eount,7 of Oneida and yState of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Grip; and I do herebj.7 declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this speci' cation.
The object of n invention is to provide a wire-grip that is simple in construction, efiicient in operation, and not liable to injure the wire under heavy strain.
Figure l shows a plan view of my wire-grip with a section of wire secured therein. Fig. 2 is a similar plan view with the aws completely open. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the construction as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section taken on line A B of Fig. 2 with the parts7 however, inverted.
Referring to the reference letters and iigures in a more particular description, l l indicate the parallel jaws of the grip, which are mounted to slide transversely on main bar 2, the said bar extending through slot-like openings in the walls of the aws. rIhe jaws eX- tend transversely somewhat farther on one side of the bar 2 than on the other and at each side of the b ar 2 are provided with grooves in their faces to better engage wire or cable. The cani-levers 3 3 are pivoted at 4 4 in the outer ends ofthe bar 2, and their cam-faces 4L are adapted to press inwardly againstthe sides of the jaws l l. rThe cam-face ends of the cam-levers are preferably forked, and engage with the cross-bar 2 on each side, as shown particularlyl in Fig. 4. The swinging ends of the cam-levers 3 are preferablj,r connected by a piece of chain 5 or other suitableilexible connector. In order to cause the jaws l l to readily open or separate for the introduction of wire or cable between the jaws, each jaw is provided with an ear la, which carries a screw or projection 7, entering a curved slot 6 in the cani end of the lever, the shape of the slot being such as to not interfere with the movement of the levers or the engagement of the cam-face of the lever with the outside of the parallel jaws. The length of these slots is such that when the jaws are completely closed the screw or projection 7 will strike on one end of the slot and when. the jaws are completely opened will strike on the other end of the slot. In this way the movements of the levers relative to the jaws are limited and the movement of the levers to a greater extent than is useful prevented.
The operation of the device is substantially obvious 5 but it may be noted that a wire or cable can be readily placed between the jaws when in open position and that when so placed it may be quite tightly gripped by drawing on the swinging ends of the levers by means of the chain or connection 5. This grip is particularlyT adapted for use in stringing and stretching telegraph and telephone wires, and in such use a tackle-block hook or other hook will ordinarily be engaged with the chain 5 at about the middle of its length. The cam levers bear upon the jaws substantially in the middle of their length, whereby the pressure from the cams is distributed over a considerable length of thewire, obviating any tendency to crush the Wire or cat it off and still secure a perfect hold thereon.
It is obvious that modifications and changes in and from the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters vPatent, is#
l. The combination in a wire-grip of parallel jaws, a slide-bar passing through openings in the awsvrespectivelyA and on which the jaws are slidably mounted7 levers pivoted in the bar at each side of the jaws and having respectively cam-faces acting against and adapted to move the jaws toward each other, and a connection between the swinging ends of the levers, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination in a wire-grip of a main bar, a pair of parallel aws having openings to receive and. being slidably mounted on the main bar, and having gripping-faces at each side of the bar, levers pivoted on the main bar at each side of the jaws and having ycam-faces acting against and adapted to move the jaws toward each other, and a connection between the swinging ends of the levers, substantially as set forth.
The combination in a wire-grip of a main bar, a pair of parallel aws having openings respectively to receive said bar and on which said jaws are respectively mounted for movement toward and from each other, and cam-levers pivotally mounted in the IOO outer ends of the bar and adapted to move the jaws toward each other, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination in a wire-grip of the main bar, a pair of jaws having openings to receive the main bar and on which the jaws are slidably mounted, the said jaws being` provided with gripping-faces extending their full length and passing said main bar, and cam-levers pivotally mounted in the outer ends of the said main bar respectively and adapted to act against the jaws to force them toward each other, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination in a wire-grip of the main bar, a pair of parallel jaws having openings to receive the main bar and slidably mounted on said bar, and having grippingfaces throughout their length at each side of the openings to receive the main bar, camlevers pivoted in the outer ends of said main bar respectively and adapted to engage with and force the said jaws toward each other,
and means connecting the jaws with the camlevers, whereby the cam-levers also serve to open the jaws, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination in a wire-grip of the main bar, a pair of parallel jaws having openings to receive the bar, cam-levers pivoted in the outer ends of said bar respectively and adapted to engage with and force the jaws toward each other, and means connecting said jaws and levers, whereby the cam-levers also serve to open the jaws, substantially as set forth.
