CHARLES MCCLINTOCK,
OF ELWCCD, INDIANA.
CONIFOUND TWITCH-HALTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 12, 1907.
Application filed April 25, 1906. Serial Nm 313,642.
T0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES MoCLiNTooK, t a citizen of the United States, residing at Elwood, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compound Twitch- Halters, of which the following is a specificab tion.
This invention relates to controlling devices for fractions or vicious animals, and has i special reference to a novel type of halter that may be properly characterized as a compound twitch-halter, the same being intended as an improvement upon the construction of halter disclosed in my companion application, Serial No. 303,569, filed February 2S, 1906.
The primary purpose of the present invention is to provide a controlling or twitch halter having a compound action-that is, embodying a double twitch-noose which secures a compound twitching effect and renders it much easier to control a vicious animal than through the employment of a twitch having but a single iioose. The latter construction perforni s its functions effectually in ordinary cases; but in strong and powerful animals of an exceedingly vicious or fractions nature it is necessary to provide a construction of twitch sufficiently powerful in its twitching effect to place the animal under l thorough subjection. It is for this purpose that the present invention is designed, and the same also involves as another improvement an improved construction of pulleyblock of a duplex form and embodying a rope-lock for fastening the twitch after having been once tightened about the animals throatand gums.
Iith these and many other objects in view, l which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is bet-ter understood, the saine consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
The essential features of the invention involved in carrying out the improvements above referred to are susceptible to structural modification without departing from the scope of the invention; but a preferred coni struction is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the improved compound twitch-halter shown in its l the head of a horse.
applied position upon Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a halter removed from the animal and showing the various partsthereof in their relative operative position. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of a 'preferred forni of duplex pulley-block forming a part of the halter.
The invention includes two principal elements-viz., a single-length halter-ro pe 1 and an antifriction-guide, (designated in its entirety by the numeral 2.)
In carrying out the special objects contemplated by the present invention the antifriction-guide 2 preferably consists of a duplex pulley-block provided with a hanger-eye 3 and at one side of the plane of the latter with a pair of housings 4, accommodating therein Jthe separate guiding pulleys or sheaves 5, which are designed to respectively receive thereover separate runs of the halter-rope 1, as will be presently explained. Also a distinctive feature of the invention resides in associating with the duplex pulley-block or antifriction-guide 2 a rope-lock for the pull portion of the rope. This rope-lock preferably consists of a wedge-shaped key 6, inserted in one of the housings 4 above the pulley or sheave 5 therein and provided atthe small end with a shouldered stop 7 which prevents displacement thereof in one direction, while displacement in the other direction is prevented by the enlarged head portion 8 ofthe key.
In adapting the halter-rope to the animals head the same is first strung through the hanger-eye 3, and at the point where the intermediate portion of the rope engages said eye the same is formed with an intermediate single slip-knot 9. This slip-knot before being closed onto the hanger-eye 3 is designed to receive thereover one of the terminals of the rope which is provided with the knotted head 10, which when the knot 9 is closed and tightened is held fast therein. Before closing the loop 9 the knotted end portion 10 of the rope is passed around the animals neck, so that the duplex pulley-block 2 will be suspended directly beneath the throat of the animal. From the slip-knot 9 therope is passed upon both sides or cheeks of the animals head to form a primary twitch-noose Il, which is passed around the upper gum of' the animal, and the upper lip is pushed up to admit of such positioning of the noose. The run of the primary twitchnoose 11 opposite the run reaching from the knot 9 is passed about one of the pulleys 5 and around the sides or cheeks of the ani- IOO IIO
mals head to form another and second twitch-noose l2, which is likewise passed 2. A twitch-halter of the class described consisting of a single-length halter-rope araround the upper gum ofthe animals mouth, ranged to form a neck and throat engaging and the free end or pull portion ofthe rope is I loop, and a pair of duplicate tWitch-nooses passed about the second guiding pulley or extending forwardly from the loop and sheave 5 beneath the rope lock or key 6. I adapted to engage about the upper gum of Vith the parts in the positions described, the animal, andl a guide supported on the and shown in Fig. l neck and throat engaging loop and receiving upon the free end I the runs of the rope forming the two nooses. tighten both of the 3. A twitch-halter comprising a duplex serve to twitch pulley-block adapted to be arranged at the with a powerful animals throat and provided with a pair oi' ing the animal under immediate subjection. f guiding-pulleys, and a rope-locking wedge When the rope has been tightened suHiloosely .mounted in one of the housings above ciently by the pull on the :free end thereof, the pulley therein, and a single-length halten the Wedge or binding key 6 is tightened upon rope reeved about the pulleys of the block to the portion of the rope therebeneath by form a pair of twitch-nooses adapted to ex simply pressing such key in a longtudinal tend about the animals head and engage the direction to effect the gripping action; but upper gum of the mouth, the free end portion when it is desired to loosen up the halter it is of the rope passing beneath said locking.- simplynecessaryto press upon the key orlock wedge, and one portion of the rope having a from the opposite end, with the result of fast connection with the pulley-block and loosening up the rope, so that pressure can be i extended into a neck and throat engaging removed from the animals gum. loop.
2 of the drawings a pull of the halter-rope will nooses l1 and l2 and the upper gum, of the animal grip, with the result of plac- To remove the device, it is simply neces- 4. A twitchhalter consisting of a singlelength halter-rope arranged to form a neck and throat engaging loop, and a twitchnoose extending from said loop and adapted to engage about the upper gum of the animal, and a pulley-block arranged at theanimals throat and having a pulley receiving the free portion of the rope, and arope-locking wedge loosely mounted in the housing above said pullev.
sary to loosen up the single slip-knot Qand pull out the knotted terminal l() of the neckengaging loop 12X'.
From the foregoing it is thought that the l construction and action of the herein-described twitch will be readily1 understood without further description.
I claim-- l. A twitch-halter of the class described t consisting of a single-length halter-rope ar- In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my anged to form a peck arlid throat engaging f signature in the presence of two witnesses. oo and a air o twitc i-nooses exten ing; 5 1 roilhsaid loliip and adapted to engage about f CHARLES MCCLIB TOOK' the upper gum of the animal, and a guide arranged to receive the runs of the rope forma ing the two nooses.
