J. JUNG, OF VN u' Letters Patent No. 84,359,
EW'AEK, NEW JERSEY.
dated November 24, 1868.
IMIPRO'V'ED METHOD OF 'CONSTRUCTING- CHAINS.
The Schedule referred to in these Lette Be it known that IFI., GEORGE J UNG, of Newark, Essex county, State of New Jersey, have invented'a chain, as a new aiticle of manufacture in jewelry, and which I denominate The Fish-Scale Chaim and I hereby declare the following to be-a clear and full description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a link as it appears Figure 2, a perspective view of the link after being bent, and before being connected with others;
Figure 3 represents va front view of the chain, showin the flat side of the said chain; and
i ure 4, a sectional view.
This fish-scalev chain is constructed in the following manner:
The links aremade of sheet-metal, and stamped out in the usual manner by punches and dies, and their out line shape or congulation is immateu'al; but there must be a head, a, at each of the two extremities of the link, and the necks b 11, connecting these two heads au with the body of the link, are narrower than the heads' and there must be two apertures in the'body rs Patent and making part of the same.
0n a straight line drawn through the centres of the said heads, which apertures must be wide enough to admit the passage of the heads of the succeeding link.
In order to form these links into' a chain, the links are rst bent up, as shown in iig. 2, and the heads aa of each link are introduced into the apertures c c of the succeeding link, and then turned down, as clearly shown in iig. 4. The neck b being narrower than the aperture, gives to the links suicient eedom of motion, and thus the chain so formed is avery pliable one,
`machinery. p
Having now fully described my invention,
That I claim therein as new, and desire `to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a chain, constructed of links having twolieads and two apertures, in the above-described location to each other, and theY links being interlinked, substantially as specified.
J. GEORGE JUNG. Witnesses:
ALBERT H. Hook,
