UNTTED STATES PATENT @einen MORRIS POLLAK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WATCH-CHAIN HOOK.`
Specification forming part of Let-ters Patent No. 58,257, dated September 25, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, MORRIS POLLAK, ofthe city and State ot' New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Hooks for Watch- Ohains; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description ot the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this speeilication, wherein- Figure l is a side view of my improved hook as closed. Fig. 2 is an ed gewise view of the same as open, and Fig. 3 is a similar view as closed. Fig. 4 is a side view ot' a slight modication ofthe said hook, and F ig.5 is a view of the saine edgenise and open.

The hooks for connecting watch-rings to the chains have been made in a variety of ways. usually however with a hinged swivel, held together by a nut, and in some instances double hooks have been employed that can be turned apart by the hooks moving parallelly to the plane on which they separate; but these are liable to become unhooked.W
The nature of my said invention consists iu a divided hook, the points of which stand in opposite directions, and the parts are united by a rivet or pin, so that the hooks move apart sidewise. Hence when the ring of the watch -is entered it has to be hooked one Way into one hook and then the other Way into the other hook, after which the hook is closed, and the action of the ring of the watch is to keep the hooks closed.
In the drawings, a and b are the hooks,
united by the crosspiu or rivet c, so that the hooks can be opened by turningthem sidewise bodily as they swing upon said pin c. The hooks stand with their points in opposite directions, and the shank of one hook has an offset, against which the point of the other hook closes, so that the hook,when closed, sha-ll present a smooth surface, so as not to be opened by anything catching into the pointot' the hook.
This improved hook may be made, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, with a swivel-ring, d, at its upper end for the watch-chain to be attached to; or it may be made with a second pair ot` hooks for this purpose, as seen at e and f,

By this mode ot' construction it is almost impossible for the Watch to become accident- .ally disconnected from the chain; but when the hooks are purposely separated. by the introduction between them ot' the edge ot' the nail or a knife the watch-ring muy be unhooked. t
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hook for watch-chains and other arti cles, formed double, with the points standing in opposite directions, and attached to each other by a pin or rivet'that allows said hooks to separate sidewise, in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
