UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 22, 1907.
Application filed Jui1e30, 1906. Serial no. 324,246.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MoCALL, a citizen of the United States, residing in Price, in the county of Carbon and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Spring Tighteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the ings.
My invention relates to improvements in means for adjusting the degree of tightness of a bed-spring; and the object of my invention is to provide a device of this class which will be simple in construction, cheap in manufacture, and efficient in operation.
In the drawings illustrating the principle of myinvention and the best mode nowknown to me of applying that principle, Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 is a side view, of my improved bed-spring tightener.
The side rails a are connected at one end by a yoke b, in which is journaled the end of a shaft 0, upon which is mounted a roller d, to which is-suitably secured one end of the bedbottom or bed-spring e, the other end of which is fastened to a foot-piece. (Not shown.) One end f of the shaft 0 projects through the yoke b and is squared to engage a Wrench 9, by means of which the shaft 0 and its roller d may be rotated. Secured to each end of the roller (1 is a ratchetwheel 72 the teeth of which are engaged by'the toe of a pawl i, pivoted at to one of the side rails and held in engagement with the teeth of the ratchet Wheel by means of a flat or leaf spring is.
The bed-bottom e is provided with loops m,
accompanying drawand in order to which engage the hooks n, formed on the top of the plate 0. The side rails a are formed with slots 2), through which pass bolts 9, which, in combination with the nuts 1", secure to the side rails.
By rotating the shaft wrench g the bed-spring may be tightened, prevent the bed-spring c from contracting in width, and so to maintain the width of the bed-spring uniform through- I out its length, the plates 0 are moved along bolts which pass through the end of one of said side rails;
the side rails in the slots 1) and have their hooked ends engaged with the loops formed comparatively in the edges of the bed-bottom.
What I claim is- The combination with a pair of slotted side rails, of a yoke which connects said side rails at one end thereof; a shaft j ournaled in said yoke, one end of said shaft projecting from said. yoke and having a squared end; a wrench which engages said squared end; a roller mounted fast upon said shaft; a pair of ratchet-wheels, one of which is secured to each end of said roller; a pawl for each of said ratchet-wheels, said pawl being pivoted on the a spring secured controlling said with loops and of plates having said loops; and I slots in said side rails for adjustably securing said plates to said side rails.
GEORGE W. MGCALL.
to one of said side rails and pawl; a bed-bottom formed secured to said roller; a series hook ends which engage in Witnesses:
