To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, VVILLIAM citizen of the United States, residing at Bal timore city, in the State of Maryland, have.
invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Consuming Attachments for Boiler-Furnaces, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanyi g drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. a
My invention relates to improvements in steam-boiler furnaces, and particularly to an attachment therefor for accomplishing thorough combustion and preventing the discharge of smoke and soot in firin up Theinvention is shown as app%ied to various types of boilers and may with roper changes in mechanical details be app ied to any type of boiler-furnace and it consists in providing an attachment for delivering steam in the rear of the bridge-wall of a furnace into the combustion-chamber, said steam-jet being controlled by a valve, preferably arranged at the front offthe furnace within convenient reach of the operator, the
steam being directed into the combustionchamlper. in such a way as' to first form a cloud to check or hold in sus ension the products. of. combustion and voatile particles arising from the fire when the coal is' first put on, and yet blowing in the general direction of the draft toward the stack, so as to increase-the draft, and finally acting to clean the tubes. 1' I I I have found in practice that by the use of this attachment on a Heine boiler at the Balboiler of the usual type provided with my invention.- Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the a lication of my invention to a Babcock and illcox boiler. Steam is led from the steam-chamber to the vertical'pipe b and thence to the horizonboiler and supplies the jets d with steam, these jets extending throughthe hollow staybolts 6 in the rear wall of the boiler. The cock f controls the steam-sup 1y to the jets, and it is located at the front of the boiler and within easy reach of' the operator. The jets steam beneath the top baffle-plate and in the space above the rear of the combustionchamber.
The operation is as follows: When the attendant desires to fire up and before raking heated it aids in combustion and also by its force tends to keep, the tubes clean.
As soon as the stirrmg up of the fire is endbegins to burn properly and danger of smoke is over the cock f is closed.
