Description

, UNizrEn STATES PATENT OFFICE. f
CORNELIA B. noTCHinss, or WATERTOWN, CONNECTICUT.
Specification ,of Letters Patent.
GARMENT-HANGER; l
Application filed-March 21,1906. Serial n 307,267
To all whom it may concerni Be it known that I, 'CORNELIA B. Hofon- KISS, a citizen of the United States, residinv at Watertown, in the county of Litchfieldv and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Hangers, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention consists of a novel and a'd-1 support the garmentorgarments] carried. thereby in s aced relation to a wall or other support to W 'ch the device may be attached,
this obviating all likelihood of contact of the clothing with a damp wall or the like, which is objectionable for obvious reasons. I
A further object of the invention is to secure a holder which will support both a'coat or waist andskirt or similar articles of wearing-apparel in such a way that the same will not interfere with one another to cause wrinfkling or crushing thereof, as is incident to the ing-apparel in the customary way, while the use of most garment-hangersat present commonly employed. I
For a full understandin 'of,v the invention, of the merits thereof, an also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which-- I Flgure 1 1s a perspective view of a glgrmenthanger embodying the invention. i -2 is a rear elevation of the'hanger, dotte lines showing the garments suspended therefrom.
Correspon ding and like parts are referred? to in the following description and indicated reference characters.
In the practical embodiment of the in all the views, of the drawings by thes'ame invention the hanger consists of a su porting' frame 1, from which-projects latera ly an attaching'member or bracket 2. The supporting-frame 1 is desi ned to assume a horlzontal position when tire device is in actual use, and said frame carries pendent clamps or hangers 3. The frame 1 is designed to support a coat, waist, or similar article of wear- ,.hanger is sus endedto clamps 3, which are loosely connected with the frame 1, are adapted to be engaged with askirt or like article of the latter when out of use. ing of the clamps 3 is advantageous, in that they are movable toward one another to enapparel to support gage with skirts or similar articles of different sizes. Furthermore, under some adaptations of the invention said clamps may be used independently. of one another tocarryseparate articles of apparel.
In the specific construction of the inven-' tion the hanger is preferably made from wire to cheapen the costof manufacture and to in crease the practicality of the article materially. .For this reasonthe frame I preferably embodiesspaced parts made by bending lhe loose mount a length of wire upon itself intermediate of its ends, theend portion of the wire be' extended laterally to form the bracket 2, w 'ch is composed of three loops 4 preferably,'one
. extremity of thewire projecting downwardly from the uppermostof the loops 4 and being joined with the lateral extensions connecting the frame lfwiththebracket 2 in such a way that it forms a .brace 5. Itwill'be observed that the form'- of the bracket-loops 1 is such 1 that these-loops radiate froma central oint,
projectingupwardl'y, laterally, and ownbearing against the support from which the sitionr The anger is therefore not likely to old the hanger in pomove into a positlon such that garments susipended thereon will be caused to come into contact with a wall, garment, or any adjacent art, which would cause wrinkling thereof.
he sideof the frame 1'from=which the hangers or clamps 3 are suspended is preferabl "offset near the oppositeends of the frame to drm seats in whic the-upper extremities of the clamps 3 are mounted. Each of the clamps 3' consists of alength of sipring-wire bent upon itselfbetween. its ven s to form e upper portions thereo and t on divergspaced spring sides, brou ht to ether near mg when said sides are normally apart, thelower extremities ofthe clamps 3 being formed with suitable .clamp' members 6,
ada ted to. be forced together by means of the 00p 7, slidableflongitudinally-of the sides vof each clamp.
When in use, a skirt or article supported by the clamps 3 will be arranged at least partially within the space surrounded by the coat or article of wearingeapparel which is suspended upon the frame 1 Having thus describe 5- 1s claimed as new 1s d the invention,- what A garment-hanger comprising a horizontal frame, suspending means carriedby the frame for connecting a garment therewith,
and a bracket extending from the rear 01- 10 tion of the frame and c of loops radiating from omprisin a plurality a centra" point, said loops being adapted to form a firm bearing against a support from which the hanger is suspended, the uppermost of said loops being adapted to form the bracket.
' In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
